Flight Simulator Won't Finish Loading

Today I can’t get FS to start. It shows the Monument Valley screen and a rotating circle in the corner, but goes no farther. It’s in windowed mode, so I can stop the display by clicking on the X, but the music continues. Task Manager shows it still running using 2.5 GB of memory until I select Stop Task. Everything was working fine last year (yesterday ). My internet connection seems to be working fine for all other functions, even streaming movies. What’s wrong?

Well, I tried a number of things including listing the folders containing MSFS as exclusions to Windows Defender. I’m not certain that was the source of my now being able to complete the download.
