Flightsimulator.exe won't close upon quitting

Starting version 1.38.2.0, I have noticed that flightsimulator.exe only minimizes and not quits fully once I quit the sim. This issue remains despite doing a clean reinstalltion of the sim and not running any companion apps like little nav map or navigaph.

I can only fully quit the sim by going into the task manager where it keeps running otherwise. I have todo this every time I run the sim. Please assist me for any solutions.

You mentioned not using any companion apps but now community add-ons. Does this issue still occur if you dempty your community folder too?

Something is still running in MSFS as shown by the 32.6% CPU, which is actually quite high.
I presume when you come to restart the sim you get the warning about not closing properly and asking if you want to start in “Safe” mode or not. Try opening in Safe mode, go all the way to starting a flight then close the sim down as you would normally. This should reset any glitches that may have ocurred and hopefully let you close down normally in future.

I have the same issue. Reported in:
MSFS 2020 keep running after quit to desktop - Bug Reporting Hub / Install, Performance & Graphics - Microsoft Flight Simulator Forums

Yes, I tested this after I reinstalled the sim yesterday night with nothing in my community folder.

I have always had this, except now it happens less frequently. I always check in Task Manager if it is still running, or just shut it down via TM in the first place.

The weird thing is, after I force quit it in task manager and restart the sim, I don’t get the warning about not closing properly. So I never get the option to start in “Safe” mode. It just boots directly in normal mode. I also haven’t had a CTD yet which would also make me get it.

Is there a way for the sim to force boot in safe mode?

I am also getting this issue. Did a clean reinstall of 2020 without downloading anything further and without anything in community folder. Still same issue. Have to close it in task manager.

Try closing via TM whilst in “flying” mode i.e. force a CTD. Afer that I’m out of ideas. Frustrating innit?

This was a way to force Safe Mode in MFSF 2020. I don’t know if it will work in 2024. Thanks. --Redeye

This is a weird way around your request, but hopefully it helps.

If you drop an empty file called running.lock in this directory, before starting the sim, MSFS will prompt you to use safe mode. This is for MS Store version, not sure what it would be for Steam.

C:\Users%username%\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\running.lock

Another option to force the safe mode is once you have the sim running in normal mode, open Windows Task Manager, terminate msfs.exe and restart. You should get the safe mode prompt.

Thanks for the tip. Was able to boot the sim in Safe Mode. When I closed it, it yet again did not close fully but just minimised it. What also frustrating is in some instances the CPU usage percentage was lower when the sim was running compared to when not actually closed. The image below is when I closed the sim running in safe mode but it is not really closed.

Thanks for the tip. Tried it but running the sim in safe mode and closing it after still does not close it. I had to force close it in the task manager. CPU usage remained around 33% when I checked in the task manager.

Not sure at all if it can help but have you tried to run msfs.exe as admin ?

Yes I have. Same issue as I have to close it from the task manager again.

I don’t understand where this image is generated? Can you enlighten?

This is from the Windows Task manager under the Processes tab that shows all the apps/programs currently running on your PC.

Thanks. I just didn’t recognize it because of the background color. When you exit MSFS, do you exit to the main menu and then to the desktop?

I have the same issue, I do exit via the main menu and then to the desktop. I tried the Windows repair option but it didn’t fix the problem.
