Flying Fries Quasar

Guys - I am not allowed to post on discord or find a way to contact them here.

Question: With AP - it seems to be impossible to fly higher than fl 50. Tried to force it by using VS climb. Is the only way to go higher is to fly manually?

Moved to User Support Hub for community assistance.

The manual that comes with the aircraft should explain the high altitude concept.. (if you got it from the marketplace here is the link from the website https://flyingfries.com/resources-files/Quasar%20User%20Manual.pdf)
essentially, the Garmin is what drives the autopilot, and the Garmin has real world limitations on altitude and speed.

At speeds beyond Mach 1.8 or so and at altitudes above 50.000 ft the Quasar does not really behave like a plane anymore, but more like a speeding bullet. Add the immense weight and it becomes clear that not much control can be exercised anymore, at least not like in a traditional plane.

I found it best to disengage the AP once I reach 50.000 ft or Mach 2, and steer the Quasar only with elevator trim AND differential thrust. For differential thrust, in my experience engines 1 and 4 are most efficient. If your plane starts to roll left, increase thrust on Eng. 1 to go back to wings level, in case of rolling to the right use Eng. 4. Differential thrust must also be used when you want to change course.

Obviously, at high speed major course corrections are extremely slow and can induce quite a G-load. So it is best to be precisely on your intended course before you enter the high speed / high altitude realm!

Good luck, captain! :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Yep, what Stan said!

above mach 2, you are no longer manouvering, you are changing your ballistic trajectory degrees by degrees…. if you point it the wrong way: throttle idle, speedbrake out, get the speed down, realign and floor it again… then pull the throttles back to make some more fuel.

good Luck, Captains!

I have posted elsewhere about this. What others have said here is 100% correct.

I was excited to purchase the Quasar and it was a fun and unique experience reaching the edge of space and traveling at ridiculous speeds. However, my enjoyment faded pretty quickly, as opposed to any other aircraft I have purchased for MSFS. The purpose of all previous aircraft, default or addon, is to get from a departure point to a destination- more than half the fun and challernge of flight. It seems almost impossible to do so with the Quasar. As you pointed out, AP (and therefore flight planning) is useless until you descend and slow down to common parameters, at which point you are way off your planned route. Then, of course, are the challenges of finding suitable length runways, decelerating and descending quick enough to make any kind of normal approach, etc.

So, it is what it is- a novel and exciting aircraft for just “messing around” but not very functional in the world of flight - i.e. transportation from point A to point B.

The developer should be praised for what they achieved, but MSFS cannot support it in a way that makes it more than a novelty. It cannot be used like any other aircraft or take advantage of fly by wire capabilities or simple AP functions once it goes beyond what normal aircraft are capable of.

Guys - I finally figured out how to fly . Check my review:

Well, I just managed to successfully fly from the KSC Shuttle Landing Facility all the way to Edwards AFB on my first flight, and I had a ton of fun. Maxxed out at about 300 miles up. Just followed the purple line on the EFB for navigation, and hand-flew it. The one time I did try engaging the autopilot, it definitely confirmed that Garmin has not programmed its devices properly to manage flight at FL 575. But had no trouble getting to KEDW.

I did have trouble slowing down enough, though. (Haven’t read the manual fully yet, heh.) Overshot the airport by a few dozen miles and had to do a half-state-wide turn to get back.

Got it down safely, though I did roll off to the dirt runway addition they added for the Space Shuttle before I stopped.
