Forum iPad OS Formatting Issue

I spend more time on this forum than I do anything else on the Internet. Sequestering the forum to Firefox, for instance, is probably the best way to go — especially if it solves the annoyances.

It’s weird with Safari. When Safari was introduced eons ago, it was known for incompatibilities with various sites and their functions. I suppose it makes sense that it still persists in some corners of the web.

I’m just surprised others have posted here that they aren’t seeing the issues.

Yea that’s weird. But there really aren’t any settings that impact this stuff seeing as you’ve checked the 100% zoom thing already.

Chrome is very good on iOS too. Never used Firefox but yeah your call

So, I was poking further into the Safari Experimental Features and a significant number (there sure are massive numbers of these experimental features) of them are turned on.

There are quite few related to CSS.

I wonder what Safari’s defaults are for these. I certainly did not set them to on.

EDIT: Ah, there’s a “reset all to defaults” button at the bottom of the list.

Yeah there are loads but I’ve never touched them from default either. Some on / some off. I mean it MIGHT be one of those but they’re really for the forum creators to deal with, they should know what element is being used to create those toolbars etc. I wouldn’t go trying each one lol

Ha! No, I’m already testing the sim, I don’t need or want to add testing the sim’s forum to my life!

Firefox is doing the trick for now, we’ll see.

Thanks for your input. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hahah too painfully true

No worries hope it does the trick for you.

Well, it’s doing it with Firefox, too:

My lonely avatar off screen again, unless I slide the page to the left.

OK interesting so something in that top row is pushing too wide for the @media size for iPad resolution. Strange it does it even in landscape though. Can you post a screenshot in landscape?

I actually now do think a fix to this would be under the control of the MS forum webmasters according to this info. Perhaps they’ve tried to squeeze one more social media link in since the last update earlier this week and that’s just not got enough room.

Each element along the top could be made a touch smaller to reclaim the required pixels and that can be applied only for the CSS @media range for iPad / Tablets screen sizes.

It’s fine on iPhone where that stuff is reduced to just 4 items plus logo on left.

EDIT: they should probably just remove “Home” seeing as the logo click does the same thing.

Here’s a screenshot of landscape mode in Safari (one Firefox choked, I just went back to where all my bookmarks and familiarity are).

It didn’t take long for the issue to arise.

EDIT: I was too hasty posting this screenshot. In this case it was just zoomed in a bit, rather than formatted incorrectly.

So it is only when portrait that it happens? I would expect so if the cause (and fix) is what I’m saying.

I’m thinking, you’re correct.

There have been two issues:

• The formatting of the navigational header pushing my avatar off-screen due to being rendered too wide for the viewport of the iPad display in portrait mode

• When returning to the forum either when tapping back (or swiping) within forum pages, switching tabs, switching apps, or waking the iPad from sleep (and the forum is the last thing to be seen before the iPad went to sleep), the forum page will be in some state of significant zoom. It’s as though I had zoomed the page in by (what’s the gesture that is the opposite of a pinch? A pull?) hand, when I hadn’t.

The latter happens in either orientation. The former, I think, only happens in portrait.

In Settings → Safari → Page Zoom what is yours set at? For this forum I’m using 125%. You might try something smaller.

It’s always been at 100%.

Switching browsers is not likely to make much difference. Regardless which browser you choose, they all use the Safari rendering engine on iOS.

It’s definitely an odd problem. I don’t browse this forum on my iPad often, but I’ve never had any formatting issues when I have. It looks the same as it does on my desktop machine. Hopefully you can find what’s wrong.

I have no idea why 125% works for me. The only problem I have is that sometimes it is difficult to select text for a reply.

You might try small or larger % FWIW.

I also found under Accessibility that font size can be changed which might affect formatting.

I’ve checked all the Accessibility settings and there is nothing altered and everything is on default.

I’m at the point of trying another iPad we have around here, and/or resetting mine, but I have a hard time believing that will solve a webpage rendering issue for one website’s home screen.
