I’m sure this has been documented before but I have found a huge performance hog on my system. It was the main culprit for my stuttering in low FPS situations e.g. in heavily built-up areas with loads of clouds etc. The good news it is easily fixed.
The app is called Wallpaper Engine and it is quite popular on Steam.
My system specs: i7 8700K( @ 4.9MHz); ASUS 2080 Super OCed; GSkill 32GB (@ 3200Mz) SSD drives and running on a 49 inch monitor (@ 5120X1440). I also have two other 27 inch monitors mounted above that.
I generally get 40 – 50 fps in most areas without any stuttering. 35 – 45 fps in built areas (minimal stuttering) and 15 – 30 fps with all the weather added or ORBX scenery with major stuttering.
Most of my graphical settings are medium to high with one or two ultra-settings.
The good news is that you can easily setup Wallpaper Engine to automatically go into pause mode when MSFS 2020 is running or any other program if you want.
I found an increase of anywhere up to an extra 5 to 15 fps and the stuttering is almost non-existent now.
This topic is aimed at people who use Wallpaper Engine and have performance issues in MSFS. It would be helpful to those users because they now know that Wallpaper Engine has a significant negative performance impact on MSFS.
as an purchaser/owner of Wallpaper Engine software I woudl even say its best to not have it running at all when running MSFS, especially if you have LED integration, and sound monitoring enabled (for the RGB type wallpapers). The app, nice as it is when you are not running an intensive game… does trap a LOT of hardware to do what it does, and zaps perfromance.
I also suggest people also close the iCue, and/or Asus Aura apps for similar reasons, as they to cause some microstutter if they are doing active RGB changes.
