I had to replace my RTX2080Ti after it died and was no longer in warranty. The RTX4070 being the best ‘bang for buck’ would suit my system because I knew that my i9-11900k would bottleneck any GPU greater than the RTX4070. It is much better than my old GPU but…
Frame Generation:
Looked good to start with. My BF109 parked at Duxford showed 80fps. Then I looked left and right and it was all so jerky but still showing 80fps! I thought, now the scene is in ram it’d be okay, nope.
Flew over photogrammetric London and the flight became a sideshow 1-8fps
Okay, so to use FG you have to be running DX12 Beta (Dx12 won’t be sorted now until MSFS 2024). I did think this was the problem.
Same scenario, I went back to Dx11 and without FG got 50+fps with DLSS-Balanced. Maintained 38-40fps over London. Smooth flight and no jerkiness.
The freebee Alan Wake 2 suffers the same unstable FG so I have abandoned the use of that.
Having said all this, I am pleased, for a stopgap of maybe a year before I buy a new computer. Checking MSFS developers FPS, the bottleneck is only slightly caused by the CPU main thread, generally showing green/yellow but no red in all circumstances. So the GPU/CPU are quite complementary, both running very cool, usually around 65deg and the GPU being 99/100 utilised. So not really any bottleneck.
BTW the scenario was using 4K and ULTRA settings but I usually drop back to High-End setting for large airports. I have 32Gb ram. FG probably requires greater than the onboard 12Gb that this GPU has. The problem does not happen strait away but reminds me of times past when you got ‘memory bleed’ does that still happen?
Hope this might help anyone who might think of upgrading, taking into account the CPU they are using
The 4070 was not designed for 4k gaming so don’t even bother with 4K ultra. Look into a 7900xt/4080 with extra vram and raw performance. You mention stutters in Alan Awake 2? Check your vram usage and yes FG uses more VRAM.
The 4070 is a 2K card so It will perform best on a 2560x1440 monitor. Anyone that says it will run on 4K yes it will run but with compromises. Again a 4070 isn’t a 4K card.
Reducing your rendering scale below 100 will be your best option.
SU14 introduced more CPU latency causing stutters but I definitely recommend watching VRAM usage in dev tools with DX12. If you get within 1GB of your available VRAM you may already experience latency from GPU memory swapping. The easiest solution for that is to lower texture resolution.
Thanks nicthetrip, that worked. One surprise was the FG when on it put more pressure on my CPU, making it go in the red in the dev mode. I was under the impression that it was to take pressure off the CPU.
In both cases the usage never exceeded 8Gb of Vram even when flying the 206L3 heli over NYC and the stutter has completely disappeared.
I have the RTX 4070 as well but when I use DX12 with FG I get a CTD after 1-2 hours. Sometimes even in the main menu! I’ve heard that capping fps can help so I’ll try that this evening after work. Otherwise it’s DX11 for me. Btw this is with 7800x3D on 2560x1080.
RTX 4070 (Ti) doesn’t have enough VRAM for higher resolution than max 1440p in DX12 if you are using 3d party airports and AI aircraft, the best option today are AMD’s newer cards, I would wait to upgrade until Asobo implement support for AMD FSR3.
Or just lower some your settings Set LODs to 100 in demanding areas and Texture resolution to high. I have 3rd party airports, fstl, ai ships, etc. This is all on an RTX4070+5800X3D driving a 1440p ultrawide monitor.
I think the problem is folks are trying to play all on ultra on these cards.
AMD is still playing catch up? I’d rather call it a day and spend money on a 4090 if they weren’t priced at 2K here.
I’m on 4k 55 inch tv and two extra monitors. I have 5800x3d and 4070ti and two days ago I changed to dx12. I still can’t believe that ALL my stutters are gone. My sim never worked as perfect as this. I’m on the latest Nvidia drivers. I already made flights of 4 hours. No ctd or any problems at all. Few months ago I tried dx12 and it was terrible but now…
I have a 13700k with RTX4070TI 32gb DDR4 4500mhz and sometimes have sttuter too, recently use de DLSS swapper to change to 3.5.10 and this give me 60% more FPS.
Use 3 screens, one in the midle QHD and de sides FHD.
Will check with DX its in use, try the 12 to see if whe have better performance.
I feel like some update not too long ago broke some part of Frame Gen and causes some type of de-sync resulting in jitter?
Earlier this year I could use Frame Gen perfectly fine, it would boost FPS, obviously there were some interpolation artifacts if the base FPS got really low but that’s expected. Just now I did a flight and what would happen is that every so often I get a short hang (less than a second) and then Frame Gen suddenly starts jittering, it’s immediately fixed when turning it off and back on in the settings.
Anyone else seeing this? I have an RTX 4070, CPU is AMD Ryzen 9 5900x.
I just made an interesting discovery: I started in the CowanSim H125 on the helipad near Niagra Falls. Upon loading it it wasn’t jittery but still felt a little stuttery when panning. Out of curiosity I turned frame generation off and back on and suddenly it was smooth again!
So it looks to me like something, particularly with more demanding scenery, can cause a desync of the frame generation. I made that observation before, but given this new discovery, it seems like it can get desynced to various degrees.
I suspect what happens is that the generated frames get delayed, this would mean that in the case with slight desync, it presents as inconsistent frame pacing, but in more severe cases, it will draw frames (real/generated) out of order, which causes the jittering.
Edit: This would also explain why turning down the graphics settings works for some people, presumably the drift could be stronger with higher system load.
After downloading and installing latest nvngx_dlss_3.5.10.
I have butter smooth performance 95 to 120 FPS with FG on and DLSS on quality.
All settings on high.
