Yesterday I decided to do a fresh install of MSFS to solve some minor bugs and performance issues(attempt to solve). I started the fresh install yesterday afternoon after clearing everything and restarting the computer.
The install was taking much longer than expected. I checked on the install about 2 hours in and found it was hanging in the decompressing stages. I closed the program and planned to restart it, but I noticed that my CPU was still being utilized. After investigating, I found that MSFS had not ended as a process and was still utilizing CPU resources.
Not long after that I received the attached blue screen. After the restart I closed all unneeded processes/programs and attempted the install again. Same issue occured with the decompressing in the update stage before ever making it to the main menu.
Today I uninstalled the program to try again fresh. Same issue.
I have already rolled back the Nvidia drivers to 531.29, but have recently accepted a windows 11 update. Unsure if that is the memory culprit or not. My internet connection averages 450-500 mbps and the update screen shows an average of 35 megabytes per second.
Open to suggestions.
PC - 5900x, x570 ASRock TaiChi, 32 gb RAM, P5 NVMe for boot and MSFS, RTX 4080, 1000 W PSU
Memory Management BSOD are (almost) always a ram hardware issue.
Time to test your ram!
Start with a good cleaning/dust removal of everything in the case, fans included, then remove all sticks and reseat them. Make sure they being cooled well too.
Sometimes this will cure the issue but most often, one or more ram stick are failing.
Happy Hunting!
Will do! Iâve run a couple of stress tests and nothing else fails or triggers a blue screen. The update may have been the culprit, too early to tell yet. Still downloading the updates after install.
I rolled back originally to prior to the windows update and still had issues. After using the restore point I had other BSODs show up. A week ago I added new RAM to my pc. Since the roll restore did not solve my issues, I decided to replace the new RAM with my old RAM.
I get further into the MSFS install and update, but still am getting stuck with the final decompression. Attached are my latest screenshots from this morning. Just to clarify, I have installed the latest windows update again, and now I get to the 100% portion of the update but am unable to decompress the last file.
Other info - I can run X-Plane 12 with no issue, Halo Infinite with no issue, and have run Passmark, Windows memory test = Pass, 3D Mark Stress Tests and Benchmarks with no BSODs. Every BSOD has come with the MSFS update running or after shutting MSFS off and finding the program has not entirely shut down.
The MSFS program is also not closing when I exit the updater. It remains open in the background and to close the program I have to go into the task manager processes to end the task. If I do not, there is a constant 5-20% load on my CPU.
I donât want to, but I am considering a fresh windows install. I have repeated the MSFS uninstall/install almost a dozen times now and all have lead to issues. I am going through the Windows Event logs now looking at those for clues.
I have now completed a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro and am still having an issue. Before posting this I ran hardware checks, memory checks, and NVMe/SSD checks and everything passed. No hardware issues found from software tests. I also checked all hardware components except for the cpu for proper "seating
I started getting BSODâs last week as well trying to reinstall the sim. I also got them installing DCS. Running Memtest86+ showed my ram was failing. Interesting side note, I had a powered USB hub attached to the rig. When I unplugged the power supply for the computer, the motherboard lights still glowed. I unplugged the hub, and the motherboard lights went out. The hub was feeding power to the motherboard. I am not sure if this contributed to the memory failure.
This is really interesting. After updating my graphics drivers last night, Iâm having the exact same issue. Not just with MSFS, but with my PC in general.
Iâve heard 531.29 can be the CAUSE of the blue screens. Have you tried rolling back to 528.49, which is known to be stable?
@HoraryFanatic1 I have gone back to even older drivers to see if that would remedy the issue but no luck.
The fresh install of windows and the latest Nvidia drivers have ended all of my BSODs.
@OldpondGL That is pretty crazy that the external hub kept your system powered like that. My BSODs started after updating to Win 11 update 2023-03 Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 11 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5023778)
After that update is when all of my BSODs started. I was having some strange performance issues before hand, but no BSODs. I did a system restore and things only got worse from there. I gave up troubleshooting and and my third try, was able to get a âfreshâ windows install, all apps removed but files retained. The two other attempts failed but returned me to my then current install of windows.
@Hester40MT Any suggestions, I have posted a lot since the âOPâ, but do you have any other ideas. I am still stuck at the checking for updates page after a fresh install no matter how many times I re-install the sim.
After the fresh install MSFS is no longer âhangingâ after closing, but I am unable to get past the checking for updates screen following a fresh install and all data being downloaded and decompressed.
I decided to intall onto a different drive and am still stuck. Here is the last command from the update post install that I am stuck on. I let it sit on this for over 4 hours and nothing.
