Upgraded CPU from Intel 10600K tonight to a AMD 9800X3d. Using my RTX 3080 I was able to obtain 93FPS where prior I was getting 49. Also went from DDR3 32GB memory to 64GB DDR 6400. Below are my results, not sure if they are poor, average, or great hoping you guys can tell me. I have not yet updated any of the drivers, this is just whatever the stock system installed when putting in the new hardware.
My test airport is KATL Atlanta with real time traffic at 11:00AM with real traffic on and photogrammetry on. All setting on Ultra with the exception of rendering scale set to 135. 1440 resolution.
10600K + RTX3080
Render Scale 135
FPS 49
10600K + RTX3080
Render Scale 400
FPS 33
9800X3D + RTX3080
Render Scale 135
FPS 93
9800X3D + RTX4080 Super
Render Scale 135
FPS 92
9800X3D + RTX4080 Super
Render Scale 400
FPS 60
I also tested the RTX 4080 in X8 mode vs X16 by taking out some NVME drives, saw no increase or decrease in performance between X8 and X16 on the GPU.
The 9800X3D being cooled by Cooler Master Atmos 360 never exceed 51C (unbelievable). At idle it runs 43C.
What was interesting to me is that I saw very little performance increase going from the RTX 3080 to the 4080. Until I get to try VR I’m wondering if I should return the 4080?
Tried London Heathrow @ 9:00AM and was getting 60FPS with render scale on 200%, with frame generation on of course that doubled.
Obviously the largest and unexpected performance increase for me was going from the 10600K to the 9800X3D. Unless VR changes things once I try it I think the even the 4080 may be overkill for MSFS so my idea of trying to get hands on the 5090 seems much less like a good idea now.
That’s a very impressive performance gain for your CPU upgrade. While your GPU upgrade may not have revealed its power in 2D, VR will certainly give it a good workout, especially if you get a high res headset like the Pimax Crystal Light.
Two years ago I upgraded my 10850K and 3080 to a 5800X3D and 4080 and both gave a significant boost in VR performance with the Reverb G2 I had at the time. I subsequently updated from the 4080 to 4090 and again achieved another significant boost in performance, enough to switch from DLSS to TAA and getting clearer instruments in the cockpit.
I now have a Quest 3 and my 4090 still gets a good workout most of the time, but my lowest FPS comes from CPU-bound scenarios, like your test scenario. I have a 9800X3D on the way, so hopefully this will give me the min 40 FPS I seek for motion reprojection everywhere, well just in time for MSFS 2024 which will probably change the performance balance once again!
I gather this question is meant for the OP, but if you did mean me I am getting a Gigabyte B650 Aorus Elite AX V2, primarily because I currently have the B550 equivalent of it for my 5800X3D and have been very happy with its capabilities and performance.
Ah yeah, sorry, I did mean the OP, but thanks for the response :). I keep hearing Gigabyte as being a great motherboard for AM5. I’m always nervous moving from intel (11900k) to AMD only because of chipset issues with various hardware addons (eg I think my Creative AE5-Plus has issues with AMD motherboards). But that 9800x3D looks very tempting to go with my 4090.
I too was nervous moving to camp AMD, having had a less than average experience with the Athlon64 many years ago, but I was pleasantly surprised with how solid AMD products now are. I remember being amazed at how little power draw the 5800X3D had compared to the 10850K and so much more performance. The 9800X3D should be even better all round.
Hi motherboard is X870E AORUS ELITE* WIFI
Worked right out of the box without issue, I don’t know a whole lot about motherboard but so far no problems with this one - based on reviews it was good value but obviously there are better boards and cheaper boards that do the same but the consensus seemed to indicate really no reason to go x870e yet, the justification in my mind was simply future proofing should I want to upgrade in the near future since x870e is pcie5 native.
also went with c8 antec case, let me tell you though with a 4080 Tuf super there is not enough room to get good access to the MB, even in the c8 with this card space seems to evaporate.
That would be my advice to anyone about to build is get the largest case you can, love the antec but wish I had more room now.
I’ve never owned anything but intel but with the last 3 launches there have been too many problems reported and add to that the power draw and heat it made me try AMD as most people only had good things to say about 7800x3d. Still very early but no reason I’m not an AMD convert at this time at least as far as CPU’s go.
I just tried it tonight, managed to pull 45-50fps in ATL with 135 on the render scaling slider mostly everything set to ultra and real time traffic at 11:00AM. I will say compared to the 3080 the Reverb G2 looks so much crisper and cleaner now. I think I could probably lower render scale down to 100 and turn clouds to med and few other settings down to hit 60fps.
Caveat to the above when I takeoff from hartsfield the area is surrounded by trees and I notices the impact on the FPS more than at the airport. If MSFS 2024 as well I’ll be happy enough.
