FS2020 Crash on loading screen

Hello! I can’t start the sim because it is crashing on loading after the latest update. Please roll back with the backup!

With Nvidia driver 572.16/572.42/47/60,70,83, 576.xx, 577.xx, 580.xx and latest, Nvidia app and DX12 selected in MSFS 2020 a CTD won’t occur.

However, with DX11 selected in MSFS 2020, using the same latest Nvidia driver and Nvidia app, a CTD will occur.

Until Nvidia fixes the application and Asobo MSFS 2020 please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

image

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR

If you need Nvidia app, optimize MSFS 2020.

OR

If Nvidia app installed go to:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA
delete folder named NGX

OR

Uninstall NVIDIA app

Hi TenPatrol! Editing the opt-file helps! Thank you! I have not installed the Nvidia-App because then the sim would crash while loading. As fare As I understand you I don’t need the Nvidia-App, right?!

Can I choose DirectX 10 for flying when the sim has loaded?

MSFS 2020 is either DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 (Beta)

Have a look in Windows event log and see what is reported.

Sorry, I meant Directx 11.

Same issue for me, except 2-3min after starting a flight (2D and VR).

Changing to DX12 seems to have mitigated the issue. However, now my performance is severely downgraded. Far, far worse.

I hope this can be fixed promptly… Annoying is understating it.

If my suggestion helped, mark it as the solution - it’ll help other players with the same issue.

If you haven’t needed the NVIDIA app until now, then you still don’t need it.
I have it uninstalled myself and I check for new drivers manually on NVIDIA’s website once a week.

You can switch back to DX11, but in that case, you’ll need to either uninstall the NVIDIA app and restart PC, or delete the NGX folder.

I had been having this issue from a few months back and came across the solution involving Nvidia App as described above and had a fairly stable system with DX11 and HAG on in MSFS2020 with Nvidia app uninstalled and the latest NVidia drivers.

However, yesterday I updated to SU16 and completed all the world updates and ran up MSFS as normal and all seemed fine. But then the second time I started the sim, it crashed out during the loading screen. Went all round the houses removing community folder items etc and eventually remembered about the Nvidia app issue, but in my case, it had already been uninstalled for a long long time. I then came across another thread on this forum about the same subject and the last poster said he too didn’t have Nvidia app installed and was getting a crash just like me. His initial solution was to reinstall Nvidia app and then immediately uninstall it. I tried this and to my immense surprise it worked. However, after closing the sim and immediately restarting, it again crashed.

So, it seems now that under SU16 the workaround for this issue no longer works consistently. My best guess is that because the sim now has a fix for the not shutting down properly bug, this is in some way tidying up or removing something left behind after uninstalling the Nvidia app which allowed the sim to fire up. Installing and uninstalling the app works fine every time for the first run up of the sim and thereafter fails again.

I am not seeing much on the forums about this so far, maybe most people do not use DX11 and HAG on. When I first had this problem, I just went for DX12 and all was well except that I started to get fairly random crashes, sometimes after quite a long period into a flight and eventually decided DX11 was more stable and so switched back. Since using DX11 I have had no crashes or issues to speak of.

So where does this leave us, hopefully someone out there has a new suggestion on how to workaround the issue. Would like to hear from anyone who has reliably got DX11 ands HAG to work in MSFS2020 with latest Nvidia drivers and SU16.

Cheers

I had a problem after the update while updating content. Had a power outage. After that it would be stuck on checking for updates forever. Tried deleting the .part file. Didn’t help. Had to do a total reinstall overnight. Then had the same problem as you. Optimized with Nvidia then it started. Updating content today while I’m at work. What a pain.

So they broke something else for fixing the closing flight sim issue? I did a successful flight with Fenix a320 last night then went back to main menu and it ctd. Should I update to the newest Nvidia driver? Also on DX11 hags off. No Nvidia app.

I’m running the latest SU16 with HAGS currently on with DirectX 11 (tried 12 as well) and without issue. I have 140 items in Community folder as well. i7 14700F, MSI Pro B-760 VC Wifi II, 32GB DDR5, RTX 5060ti OC (580.88), 2TB nVME, 4TB nVME, 4TB Crucial SSD

If you had the NVIDIA app installed and experienced a CTD during loading, please take a moment to describe your issue in the linked thread and vote on it. The more people report it, the faster we’ll get a fix. Thanks!
