The wrath of Khan - Mongolia

As the morning sun cast its warm glow over the Mongolian landscape, I prepared for another day of adventure in my trusty TBM 930. My job as a pilot involved transferring tourists and locals across the country, showcasing the beauty of Mongolia from the skies.

With over 2000 hours logged in the TBM 930, I felt confident in my abilities to handle whatever challenges came my way. However, today presented an unexpected hurdle – the mechanic responsible for our pre-flight checks was once again drunk, leaving us to double-check everything ourselves.

Despite the low cloud ceiling, visibility remained good as my long-time buddy and copilot joined me in the cockpit, along with a group of excited tourists. Together, we set off on our journey, soaring over the vast wilderness of northern Mongolia.

Nomad tents dotted the landscape below, serving as reminders of the traditional way of life in this remote region. Yet, beyond these occasional signs of human presence, it felt as though we were the only people left on the planet, surrounded by nothing but untamed wilderness.

As we flew, I couldn’t help but keep an eye out for any sign of the grave of the Khan, a mythical treasure rumored to be hidden somewhere in these remote lands. Despite countless flights over the region, the mystery remained unsolved.

Feeling a sense of solitude and awe, I contemplated the vastness of the landscape below, imagining what it must have been like for those who traversed these lands centuries ago. But as we neared our final destination in Ulaanbaatar, it was time to leave the solitude of the wilderness behind and carry on with our journey, eager to see what new adventures awaited us.

Other Information

“Join when you can, leave if you must” is the philosphy when it comes to attending
the FSB group flights. It is totally fine to arrive late and join up whatever leg we are currently on. Or even mid air!

Voice channel highly recommended, even if you can’t speak, for breaks, and other info!
