FSR2 and DX12 are a great combination in VR

I haven’t seen any posts yet discussing FSR2 in VR, so I’ll start it. I have an AMD GPU (6900xt) and therefore haven’t been able to use DLSS in the sim. I don’t think I’ve been missing much but a few days ago I tried FSR2 and it’s awesome. I was using OpenXR Toolkit with FSR1 but FSR2 in the sim is working much better.

I have DX12 enabled, sharpening set to 150, 100% OpenXR, motion reprojection off, and quality mode of FSR2 and it looks better than ever with no stutters in my Reverb G2. I just came out of a flight with the Piper Turbo Arrow III and was marvelling at how clear it was both inside and outside the plane. I’ve never seen it this good so I just had to post how impressed I am with this combination of settings. Am I the only one who’s getting such good results?

Maybe I’ll try this. I have a 6800XT and a G2, and motion reprojection is so fussy with AMD it seems.

Maybe I’ll keep everything in OXRTK at native, no MR and just try FSR2 in the sim.

What sort of FPS do you get and at what graphics settings? TLOD?

When I use “balanced” FSR2 mode then I’m around 45 fps. When I run at “quality” FSR2 mode my FPS drops to high 30’s. I get smooth frames at the quality setting unless I’m in complex areas and in that case I’ll just switch back to balanced mode.

Regarding TLOD, since SU10 I can push it to 250 but usually leave it at 200 and forget about it. I used to run at 100 before so SU10 gave me a good improvement to the TLOD setting. SU10 is also when I started using DX12 so I think that helps with being able to run at a higher TLOD.

Regarding motion reprojection, you’re right. I can’t use it either. I agree it’s an AMD thing but only when using WMR. If I run the game via steam and use steam’s openxr then motion reprojection works great. But steam does not perform as well so I stick with WMR and motion reprojection off.

How do you even set this FSR2 mode? All I see is the FSR sharpening slider. Is the FSR2 option supposed to be in the same box containing TAA, DLSS etc?

Or is it because I have an Nvidia card? Cos I thought FSR is supported by both Nvidia and AMD.

Make sure you’re in DX12. I don’t think it appears if you are in DX11. You may have to restart the sim after you change to DX12.

i tried FSR in VR and for me it is stuttery and not nice.

Your system is very close to mine (5800x, 6900xt, 32 GB ddr4 @3200, win 10 pro 22h2). You didn’t mention your headset and if you run openxr via steamvr or WMR. If steamvr then I haven’t tried it in that because WMR works better. But if through WMR then here’s my suggestions.

  1. optimize your CPU PBO settings and undervolt to get its best performance. I followed this guide.
  2. do not overclock your GPU. I noticed only minor performance gains when overclocking but got increased stutters. So leave your GPU at default.
  3. I haven’t done anything special with my ram or windows10, so really I only tweaked my CPU.

I disabled everything in the AMD Adrenaline software like sharpening. Setup the sim settings like this, set OpenXR to 100%, motion reprojection off, and set in-game to TAA at 100%. Make your other settings such that you’re getting around 30 fps. Stutters at this point is fine. I normally go to the max settings for each and then dial it back 1 notch so mostly high settings but have turned down the grass, trees and bushes, and houses to medium. Those 3 settings have a big impact for me.

Once your system is setup to get 30 fps then turn on FSR2 and play with the quality settings until stuttering goes away.

Good luck.

Thx for suggestions, but i have no fps problem, it’s more like it’s not working as it should.
It’s more hitching, stucking when i fly circles. I can see the fps are high enough, it’s just not fluid.

Do i have to make settings in the Adrenalin to enable the fsr feature like superresolution, scaling or anything i have missed?

My headset is a G2, over new york i get enough fps, around 85 in good scenes.
I use WMR, no steamvr. OpenXR is set to 100.

My experience with VR is very good, it’s just that i would prefer 100% render resolution with the quality settings i drive my system. (using 90% with TAA). Video can be seen under Community / official Bell 407 thread.

No, just in the sim.

I know what you’re describing here. It happens to me too in complex areas at the FSR2 quality setting with my system setup as I described. But then I just go to FSR2 balanced and it goes away.

Your goal of reaching 100% in OpenXR is a good one because I’ve reached it and the visuals are great. I hope you get there.

I have a similar set up to yours. Ryzen 9 5950x, Rx6800XT GPU, 64 ram. Can you post what all the OpenXR tool kit settings that you use please? Much appreciated!

Question for my fellow FSR VR users, have any of you come across the weird super over sharpened glitch where like a fraction of your image will be super oversharpened but not the rest?

It’s kind of hard to describe but every so often when I launch the game and I hop into a flight I’ll notice like a diagonal stripe, or a little area below my main view that is ridiculously over sharpened I noticed it looking over trees particularly, and changing sharpness levels doesn’t change it I have to turn FSR offer to go away and then my next flight I turn it back on and it will be okay was curious if anyone else has run into this issue or knows any way to fix it.

How is cockpit instrument clarity with this?

FSR Balanced or Quality does not make much difference here.
Had to set OpenXR to 150% to get decent sharpness though,
most other setting at 100%, most Ultra, some high, buildings medium
no supersampling or filtering,
FPS 40+ if I am lucky.
Before the last update it ran 50+ with super clear instruments, but that is gone again (WHYYYYY?!!!)

Since I started using FSR2 in the sim I disabled the toolkit.

Yes, I got this a few times. I don’t know if it’s over sharpened but it’s definitely pixelated. It’s a diagonal stripe as you describe and it’s in both eyes. I got rid of it just by leaving VR and re-entering. I maybe had do leave/reenter 2 times some of the time. I havn’t seen it for the last couple days though but last week I had it a few times.

The cockpit itself is pretty clear although the glass cockpit gauges still are a little fuzzy. But the rest of the cockpit and the steam gages are very sharp for me.

Agreed they’re close but for my taste “quality” looks better so I go with that unless I’m getting stutters, then I lower it to balanced.
