Guys, there are vast amounts of aircraft freely available for you to test and convert (but not redistribute) from whichever website the original creator decided to upload it to. Redistributing files, whether they are freeware, payware, or default FSX aircraft is generally frowned upon unless you have explicit permission from the original creator.
Sim-Outhouse and AVSIM are two websites that come to mind that have very deep libraries with a wide variety to choose from.
I’ve been trying to convert the SGS 2-33 from Simvation with no success. It converts successfully using @klasbj’s tool, yet it doesn’t even show up in the simulator.
Make a copy of your aircraft folder and all its subfolders, and name it for example C172copy. Edit all of the config files that you want to change in this directory, remove textures and dll files, anything that you think isn’t going to convert.
I don’t think you can remove the air file. If you do, it will crash MSFS2020 when you try to load the aircraft. You can, however bypass some of the “bad” engine data that it contains, by adding an engines.cfg file from the SDK samples, and filling it in with engine data contained in the aircraft.cfg file. By doing this I was able to get the B-17 to start all 4 engines. When I first converted it, only one engine would start.
To set up for conversion, make a new folder in your MSFS2020 Community folder. For your aircraft, call it C172 or whatever. Open that up and make a new SimObjects folder, and open that up and make an Aircraft folder. This is where you will put your C172copy folder, the one with all the edited files.
Download and save the build.py python script from GitHub - wpine215/msfs-a320neo. You may have to search a little. Put it in your Community project folder, for example Community/C172. Open a dos command prompt and type “Python build.py” and you should see all of the files being converted in the dos window.
That’s it. Run MSFS2020 and check out your new aircraft. Don’t try to edit any of the converted files in the Community folders until we get some better tools. The config files seem to be encrypted or altered somehow. If you want or need to make more changes, go back to your original files and make the changes there, and erase the converted files, and do it all over again.
I highly recommend follow this video to the letter and you will get results, not brilliant results but at least its a great start. Remember its for personal tinkering and not to aid releasing a freeware aircraft without permission from the original dev unless you get permission. The gauges probably won’t work and the airfile will be rubbish but its a good start !!!
For dds conversion use a program called DXTBMP I’ll grab a link in a sec, always flip the dds file as I believe this is the old way to do it and may be required.
