This is not a bug. It is working as intended!

Active pause continues to simulate the plane flying but stops it from moving. Another example of this is when you are climbing and active pause, your airspeed will continue to drop and then when you unpause, you will instantly stall.

There are keybindings called ā€˜set pause onā€™ and ā€˜set pause offā€™ that you can assign to buttons in the settings. This will ā€˜properly pauseā€™ the game.

Edit: See this wishlist item discussion

OP said it also happens with the Menu pause.

I believe menu pause also behaves like an active pause. If you want a proper pause you have to do this:

Then you can open the menu afterwards if you wish.

What is the purpose of that behavior? When is it useful?

Great question! The entire purpose to ā€œpauseā€ something is for it to temporarily stop functioning. I mean if you pause a movie, it doesnā€™t keep playing in the background only to skip ahead after un-pausing.

Unknown and unknown, Iā€™m not fan of it and donā€™t use it because of the negative reasons listed in this thread.

Exactly!

It is MEANT to allow you to do things like change settings while the plane stops mid-air but effectively keeps flying. In practice it is actually pretty useless.

may be makes sense to mention that Guide:

Hi there,
Indeed, this is a deliberate choice by the developers. Instead of closing this out, Iā€™m going to move it to Community Support for others to see.

In addition to the Wishlist topic suggested by Speed1994, you may also want to look at this one (feel free to vote for both if you would like ā€“ theyā€™re not duplicates):

Active pause is pretty useless. FSX pause actually paused the simulation (including time) while allowing us to interact with the plane, I have no idea why this isnā€™t in this sim.

All pause mode consuming fuel, canā€™t do a real long flight
