Since SU4 I can’t find a way to disable ALT (altitude hold) mode, once it’s enabled. Even with a keyboard shortcut especially for ALT mode OFF it’s not possible.
Before, pressing ALT while ALT mode was active switched back to pitch hold mode (and I guess that’s how it should be)
This happend in the C172, Bonanza, Baron, Grand Caravan.
I have no addons installed, not in dev mode.
As I have found nothing about this issue in the forums, I wonder if something is wrong with my configuration, or has someone else observed this behavior? And is there maybe a fix or workaround?
I suggest you use the Working Title Mod. Since WT is now a first partner to Asobo and is leading the revamp of the Garmins (among other things), this is the best iteration of the NavUnits you can have right now, certainly better than Stock. The G1000 NXi is coming in July as an open Beta, and aims for nearly 1:1 basic functionality with the real world version.
I’ve had that issue. This is going to take some extensive research, which I can’t do right now since the wife announced “it’s Friday and we’re going out to dinner!” I knew the first, but not the latter. If you’re in level flight I found I could turn off the altitude hold button by changing the “desired altitude” by rotating the Alt dial about 700 hundred feet and then turning off the Alt button. It goes back to the pitch mode then. If climbing or descending it gets a little wonkier but if you play with it you’ll see what I mean. I/we need to research this a bit more to nail down the specific issues and report it. I’ll try to work on the specifics more tomorrow, but I suspect I’ll have a list of yard work things to work on first.
All this so far has been tested on a completely unmodded version using the 208 as a test bed.

I’ve discovered the same issue in the default Longitude following SU4. My solution is to decrease the selected altitude. I’m then able to switch off ALT.
@RDee5914
Not sure if this is actually an issue.
On many aircraft IRL you can deselect ALT, or e.g. engage V/S, but as long as there’s no change in altitude and/or selected altitude, the AP immediately reverts to ALT.
It can be an problem if your current altitude is near the altitude selected earlier in the flight. Then there is no way to use the autopilot to keep the current pitch instead of sending you back to the selected altitude. This happened to me several times while flying in mountainous terrain.
It’s not a very big issue, but again one small thing that worked fine before and is broken now.
Yea, it appears when they added the ability to capture an altitude while in Pitch Hold mode in the last patch, they wonked something up that resulted in this issue. Something new to work on in the next update.

The manual does not say if it’s possible or not to disable any mode to go back to the default PIT mode. From my understanding it should be possible somehow. Maybe a real pilot can tell us?
But what is definitely missing in FSFS, is the CWS button (or a possibility to map it). This would solve a lot of the problems related to this issue.
As long as you are not already at your selected altitude you can enter in and out of PIT mode freely, as it will hold that pitch angle until you reach the selected altitude. Essentially the PIT mode exists to AP pitch axis something to do if the pilot has not already entered any vertical guiddance prior to engaging.
This ALT problem is occurring on multiple planes with different Garmins. I also have problems on the Longitude Jet with the ALT not wanting to go off and also coming on when I select HDG on AP.
I have the same problem since a couple of days and blamed my new Honeycomb Bravo first tried various mappings- nothing helped. A workaround for me is, to turn off the flight director. I’m not a rw pilot, so I don’t know if that’s how it supposed to be…
Normally this will happen because the selected target altitude is your current altitude, change your target to something above or below you and it will happily let you go back into PIT mode until you either choose another mode or get within about 200ft of your target altitude.
Flying level at a certain altitude in ALT mode. If I deselect ALT, it will immediately return to ALT.
That’s the way it works IRL as well.
PIT is a basic mode and you usually don’t use it.
If you e.g. push VS while in ALT, the activ vertical mode (green) changes VS 0fpm
altitude will be armed (white) ALTS.
Now you can dial in a higher/lower target altidude and set the vs you want to climb/descend.
IRL (and in the sim) you normally do it the other way round.
First select a new target altitude and then you push e.g. VS, FLC.
You can also disenage ALT after setting the new target altitude and climb/descend in PIT.
