Getting back into VR - What do I need?

Dear VR Enthusiasts!

With SU3 released, I want to dive back into VR in MSFS 2024 after a long break. My previous experience was solely with FS 2020, so I’d love to hear your recommendations on the best tools (e.g., OpenXR Toolkit - is it still necessary?) and settings to optimize the experience.

I am running a RTX 3080 in combination with a 5800X3D and a HP Reverb G2.

You might need a headset

If you were able use VR in 2020, there is not much drastically different in 2024. In terms of settings, there are mainly two new settings, foveated rendering, and you are now able to set a desired fps, and the simulator will dynamically adjust your LODs to achieve the desired fps. As a starting point, use the same settings as for 2020, turn on foveated rendering, set dynamic LODs to 45 fps.

also use dlss performance and turn off displacement mapping.

A quest 3, dedicated wired wifi6 router in same room as pc. pc wired ethernet, virtual desktop. At least rtx4080, i7-14700. Run dlss quality latest dlss driver. Good to go

Depends if and how much money you want to spend!

If you ran VR with your present rig, and you should be able to, then you won’t have any problems with MSFS2024 although, of course, as before you won’t be running at anything like Ultra settings. Howeever as Asobo have managed to significantly improve the optimisation and memory handling you should do better.

You need a stronger GPU than for 2020 if you want to run the same resolution at comparable settings. OXRTK was never really “needed”, but it still has lots of benefits and I use it all the time. Especially turbo mode makes a very noticeable difference to the smoothness, it’s quite incredible.

Thanks a lot for your tips! What about Motion Reprojection? Would you recommend using it?

As I mentioned in my original post and in the tags, I am already using a Reverb G2. I am planning to wait until the release of the 5080 Super and upgrade to a BSB2 if it is worth it.

Thanks, I guess I’ll give it another try. Do you have better effects with the built in motion reprojection or with Turbo Mode of OXRTK?

Motion reprojection has never worked for me. I cannot tell the difference between 45 and 90fps anyway. But it works for many people, that’s what I hear at least.

I’ve not seen a type of repro whose artifacts are tolerable for me. I just lock to 45fps via SteamVR (best frame capper since it’s actually part of the VR render pipeline) and switch turbo mode on. As long as you have enough headroom (ideally stay below 17ms GPU frame time) it’s super smooth. Not quite 60fps smooth, but feels close enough
