I recently upgraded my system from an Intel I7-11700 KF with 32 GB 2400 Ram to a Ryzen 7-9700x with 32 GB 6400 Ram. The GPU is the same, RTX 4700.
However, the performance in MSFS 2020 is slightly worse, both visually and according to FPS monitoring in debug mode. Even at 30 FPS it is CPU limited. The CPU is not thermally throttling like it did with the Intel so that’s not it.
Does anybody have an idea why?
It does run MSFS 2024 with better performance however.

Have you checked the CPU performance in general, using e.g. synthetic benchmarks? If not, try e.g. Cinebench 2024 and see if your score matches what review sites get for the 9700X.
Also, have you updated your BIOS? Especially if you have a 600-series chipset like B650 or X670 rather than 800-series (which should support your CPU fully out of the box). Sometimes a motherboard works with an unsupported CPU, but with lower performance, for example by staying at the processor’s base clock at all times.
Thanks for the reply, I ran Cinebench as you suggested and got 19256 for multi core compared to 20485 reported by one site I looked at. It maxs running at around 5.5 GHZ and 72% of thermal limit. Motherboard is X870E, the older one was a 590. I enabled XMP but didn’t change anything else in the BIOS.
I haven’t played MSFS since the summer, I returned to MSFS last Friday. I upgraded to a new i9 14900 CPU, got a new MoBo, doubled RAM to 64 GB and am using a 4080 - my performance is much worse than ever. What the heck is going on? Is this how Asobo/MS aims to “suggest” people buy the new simulator?
That’s odd, because I have similar system specs except for the fact I’m running a 3090, and I get pretty solid performance out of 2020 & DCS, both exclusively in VR. Fs24 is a different story, it varies between awful & average on my system depending on the day or phase of the moon or whatever, who knows
