GFX settings - Chasing the Dream

The hard truth is that there is no truth.

No one can give you the best settings for your computer. No one has THE BEST settings, +30fps with is one trick, THIS IS THE WAY etc etc They’re all snake oil salesmen using clickbait to get ad revenue. You know who they are. They are all absolutely full of rubbish. People show their videos of VR, but it isn’t really a video of what they are seeing, it’s a feed out of the GPU into the recording software they are using. BUTTERY SMOOTH they say.

I only write this because I have found it really depressing that all these people are bragging about these amazing experiences and I have upgraded all through the year and spent heaps of money, and while it looks better….its not life changing or anything. I’m still tooling about with settings when I feel like it and trying out different setups.

I’ve been looking at the VR more as a project to tinker with when I want the challenge but I’ve given up expecting too much of it. VR in Microsoft 2020 is broken and that’s all there is to it. It’s unstable and the settings are all dumb and the interaction between Windows and WMR and OXRTK and MSFS and all the other ■■■■….its just utterly moronic. A stupid tangled mess that Asobo better sort out for 2024 or a lot of people will bail. I certainly will.

Newsflash: changing your power management mode, changing latency mode, texture super sampling, deleting shader caches, setting MSFS to high priority, making your monitor 1920x1080 while you use VR, cutting the head off a chicken and drinking it’s blood - nothing can fix the fact that MSFS 2020 in VR is a catastrophe.

My recommendation is to ignore absolutely everyone’s recommendations (including mine).

Set everything to the lowest possible, choose the frame rate you wanna hit and slowly add things in and see what stuff causes issues on your system and what can be added with no frame hit at all.

As a burned out VR enthusiast who has spent too many hours this year trying to get THE PERFECT solution, I can tell you that you just have to work it out for yourself.

No one knows anything, it’s all lies, MSFS 2020 is a broken mess…..but I love it just the same!

That was a good read. I like your philosophy. It also translates to life in general.

VR is such a fickle thing… so frustrating to find that exact sweets spot of settings, tools, ritualistic animal sacrifices  … even then it’s not enough. Sometimes, the VR gods are just against you and it will never work. Sometimes throwing money at the problem solves it with a massively powerful (expensive) CPU/GPU combo… and even then I know of people who can’t get it to run right. Why can’t it just work? I don’t know. I agree with everything you are saying here… except this one small piece here -

I don’t want to be lumped into this category. I created a few settings videos to try to help people, because I did find the sweet spot for my modest rig (i9-9900k, 3080ti, Quest 2). And I wanted to try to help people out. I put out a settings video and a quest controller setup video and a video showcasing some of the in-game tools I use in VR with VATSIM to give a really immersive experience. But I did this to try to help the community. The majority of the other videos on our channel are live streams in VR and the purpose of these is to… well… just have fun. I do use some image stabilization on the live streams, but the feed from the live streams comes directly from the Oculus Mirror application which is showing you exactly what I see in VR (from one eye of course). No snake oil or magic… just a little image stabilization so you don’t get sick watching my head jerk all over the place and twitch as I shake the headset back and forth quickly to look at things. And, at least on our channel, we don’t do it for views and we definately don’t do it for ad revenue  . You would laugh if you saw how much yootoooob coughs up in the form of a montly deposit. In fact, most months I don’t even meet the threshold to pay anything out and it rolls over from month to month. On average, the amount probably isn’t enough to pay for the electricity to run my setup (kidding here, but not by much lol).

Anyway, just want to say that there ARE many yooootoooobers out there who put out clickbait-y videos to try to get views and ad money. But I want to mildly defend our channel here and say that is not, never has been and never will be the point of our channel. It’s more about having fun (for me and the others in the livestreams) and maybe helping a few people out who are struggling with the mess that is VR in MSFS.

(I’m not even going to drop a link to the channel here… )

Couldn’t agree more.

I’m one who makes videos as well, but not from the perspective of gaining as many views as possible, it’s a passion I like about MSFS and making videos together. I think that’s why my “settings video” went so well, no fake, colour grading, filters or cut scenes. Just raw footage, and it’s funny because I was sharing your way of setting it up, everything to medium and start from there, with a few things to look for. Nothing more, and it’s the best video I made so far.

Thanks for your explanation, and…
if something happens with MSFS (like it happened to me), don’t forget to write down in a note.txt or word (with screenshot) so you don’t lose your settings if you have to initialize the MSFS from 0… I had the experience a few days ago that I lost all my graphics settings after a complete reinstall :frowning: (…although things like navlog and purchases etc. were not lost)

I feel exactly the same on dx 11 / 12 frame generation and all that sort of sorcery that i can’t make it stable
