It is possible. Here’s my experience as a German customer.
Go to your local supermarket and buy either a Microsoft or Xbox gift card (both are identical in anything but name). Redeem the code at Sign in to your account.

I collected a bunch of reward points so redeemed microsoft gift card from out of it and bought the deluxe upgrade in the sim marketplace. The gift card goes to your balance and you’ll see charging like this
