Totally new to this so bear with me, is that glider payware, if so, is there a freeware one that could be imported? And is there a concise explanation/video on how to import it to MSFS?
I did a video about how to manually import FSX gliders into MSFS but you might want to give this mod a try. It’s not perfect but its a beginning…
Yes Please!!!
Awesome thanks, now is there a glider i can import that isn’t payware?
I would prefer the DUO DISCUS T (or XLT) as it is both a two seater, that gives more options for glider schools for training, and it also has an extendable engine for climbing when running out of altitude. A very nice all-round performer. I would think it would be nice for the developers to have an idea about WHICH glider we would like, not only A glider.
I’d certainly not expect it, but all the above + wingsuits would be amazing.
Personally, I think the first responsibility for Asobo is to improve the platform to support gliders. From there, the 3rd parties can make any glider they please with, from what I read above, a lot less work than was needed in FSX or X-Plane.
I understand and agree. Asobo could provide for pre-programmed towing aircraft and winches to be placed correctly for takeoffs. However, the 3rd party software is too often sub-standard for real life accuracy. That’s why I would like to see Asobo “set the standard” with a detailed model, both aerodynamically, visually and instrumentwise.
That’s something that I would love to see. Soaring is always forgotten and treated as a a niche.
ASW 22 BL-J … has a jet for launch and still has a 62/1 glide ratio … not dependent on a tow plane …
This would be something new in simulation: one human player in the tow plane, another in the glider. for me this does not sound as boring as one virtuell ATC controller and many pilots: Gliders line up, please. Your tow pilot has arrrived! “Hello this is Sunny Sam. Where do you wanna go?”
Yes, the ASW 22BL–J. I flew her in FSX simulation. For me it is not a nice glider. Optimized for one thing, but not a good all in all sailplane. I prefer ASK21 - two seater. There is a Mi version with a little engine. You can even start with the engine if wind is not too strong and on your nose.
Yeah, today with FS2020 version 1.7.14.0 I had the impression that there was uplift due to housing. But I am not sure. Can be some random stuff that just worked for an extended time in one direction. And yes, this is my (limited) experience with real thermals: you search, you find, you loose, you search again. And no guarantee.
In my opinion the Aerosoft ASK21 model is the best (or only) glider for FSX. But it costs money. The ASH25 may be the best glider for free.
I want motorized ultralight trikes, like the AirCreation 582L Trike Ultralight from FSX:
Or the Aerolite 103 Ultralight Trike from XP11:
those are my instruments in both the Aerosoft ASK21 and the freeware ASH25 (so thanks!).
The ASK21 is much simpler with lower performance and no water ballast or flaps so a much much easier flight model than the ASH25. But the ASK21 variometer (glider rate-of-clinb) is an accurately modelled digital SDI C3 (at Aerosoft’s request) which IMHO is a bit complex for a training glider (and was a massive pain to program).
The most important thing for the instruments is the climb gauges (called “varios” in gliders) all have “compensation” which means they reverse out climb/sink from whatever would have been the vertical glider movement in still air so you read the effect of the air outside (i.e. the thermal / ridge lift). This is non-trivial to program, especially for a glider with water ballast and flaps, but doable and I’ve open-sourced my code since the beginning.
The worrying thing is a glider with an ‘ordinary’ rate of climb instrument kinda looks ok, and people new to soaring won’t spot the difference, but any real soaring pilot would find it almost useless unless the lift is unrealistically high. But in FSX and X-Plane I’m the only source of gliding instruments which is unfortunate. A modern computer vario today is a color panel including the nav so it’s not easy.
I agree with the comments above - FS2020 will be great if we can implement aerotow well, get some well modelled gliders with good flight models including flaps and ballast, with proper glider instruments, and thermals and ridge lift that match the clouds and the terrain.
It could be even more than that. Three players, one at each computer. Tow pilot, flight instructor and student. If you really want to go wild you could also switch the tow pilot to a winch operator for winch tow training!
Well, I have no problem with C4. I switch it on - this knob I found - and do nothing else. After retirement, I will read the full manual and be amazed what is possible.
I have imported the free ASK21-J from Wolfgang Piper. See

If they do a glider addon, then they should add thermals dependent on fields, forests, etc. as well. This sim looks perfect for gliding. They need to make it happen!
