Good program for recording flights in Windows

SatesideSiren4,
Check what kind of video file your are recording as in OBS, and what quality. I’ve put together videos that are close to an hour and a half at 1080p, and the file size was less than 5 GB. I generally record as MKV files in OBS, then convert them to MP4 for editing - and the final cut I upload to YouTube is an MP4 file.

Part of the issue I’m sure is that I’m recording in 1440P.

Could be - but it may be the file format as well. You would think a recording at 1440p would only be about 1.5 times size of one recorded at 1080p. Your files are 20x the size of mine, and I assume they are a similar length. I know when I used MSI afterburner, it would record as AVI files, and they were absolutely massive.

You might try doing a short recording as an MKV file in OBS, and see what size it is. OBS has a remux option that can convert the MKV to MP4 for you.

I will definitely give that a go. I know admittedly little about file formats. Thank you!

I don’t know OBS, so I’m wondering why not recording directly in MP4 format ? Would save converting time.

Unfortunately, OBS will not record in MP4 format. But it can convert your recordings to MP4 in the program. It’s a pretty quick process - It generally takes under a minute to convert a hour or so of footage.

I’m pretty sure mine had the option to record in MP4. In fact I’m positive it did.

Yup, sure does. My mistake.
Also, check your video recording quality settings in “output” settings. I have mine to set to “Indistinguishable Quality, Large File Size.” If you are using “Lossless” quality, you’ll get huge file sizes, with minimal gain in quality.

Also, there is a warning when using MP4 file type about it being “unrecoverable” if certain stuff happens - so I guess that’s why I went with the MKV file type. It’s minimal hassle to convert/remux, and I’d had issues with files not being usable when I used MSI afterburner and AVI files.

OBS has a bit of a learning curve. Lots of YT videos are out there on setting up capture and export bitrates and other parameters specifically for uploading to Youtube. OBS with incorrect settings can cause capture latency and tax your GPU or CPU unnecessarily.
