Good program for recording flights in Windows

Hi all,

I’ve been using GeForce Experience to record my flights for YouTube since the outset, but I think it is now causing CTDs. Long story short, I need a new program to record videos and I’m looking for suggestions. Nothing elaborate. I just want the ability to record in 1440p and as little a learning curve as possible. My videos are simple, I just record my in-cockpit view as I’m flying. No editing, no graphics. GeForce was perfect. The Game Bar app recorder is doo doo. It records in 1080p only and the audio sounds like you’re talking through a straw.

I’ll post one of my videos here so you can see what I do. That’s all I need. Would really appreciate your suggestions!

I agree with PlumbGlue87… Flight Recorder works great!

Does it do a full copy of the flight in the current view your using or can you watch the replay and change the views?

It records flight params, and during replay you can change the views, but it’s not a video recorder. For this the simplest is to use the one provided with your graphic card.

Awesome thanks!

Flight recorder does indeed work great but you will still need a Geforce experience equivalent.

Here’s what I would do for an edited video.

Perform your flight and use flight recorder (available at flightsim.to) to record the initial flight.

Replay your flight in sim and use all of the cameras and angles you want. External view, Drone, internal. …your choice. While replaying at this stage use Geforce Experience or similar (you’re looking for an alternative) to screen capture.

Use a movie editor to edit that screen capture. I used to use free Windows Movie maker but I don’t think this is available anymore…This stage is not essential but if you want to edit out all the cockups and want others to view the final product it does give a very professional looking video.

I would typically record an hour initially using all the cameras available and only 10 minutes would make the final edit.,but that is me.

I have to add you can change more than views. Time, date, weather, livery, location too.
Even the plane. With funny results when you record a flight with the TBM and change for the Cub…

Wild! Having a look at it now. Thanks fellas!

Okay, now that I’ve flown a flight with it I understand, it’s not a video recorder. That’s what I’m looking for - a video recorder that will produce a video file I can upload to YouTube. Problem is, the one with GeForce Experience works great, but it’s crashing the sim.

Anyone know of a good video recorder?

Something wrong with your params or/and driver. Many people use it without problems.
I can’t help on this point, I’m on good side of the Force, I have an AMD GPU.

I tend to use the GeForce one too but there’s a perfectly usable one in Windows 10 itself using the Game Bar. ‘WindowsKey+G’ to open, click on the Capture icon and then click on Start Recording…

Yeah, the problem with that one is that it only records in 1080 and the audio quality is terrible.

Try OBS. https://obsproject.com/ It should support 1440p as well

Many thanks for the recommendation!

No problem. :ok_hand:

I hardly use it myself!

If it needs it and I only have low(er) resolution captures, I upscale later… Not ideal for MSFS but can be done…

I use FlightControlReplay to record and replay flights and OBS to record video of those flights.

Getting ready to try this out, it looks amazing!

As other have mentioned, OBS Studio is a decent product to use for screen capture, and it is what I use most of the time personally. It is on Asobo’s official list of programs that don’t play well with MSFS (supposedly can cause instability/CTD issues.) I do get a framerate hit whenever I record with it, but other than that, it has performed fine.

I’ve also seen folks tout MSI Afterburner. Some users say they think the colors are a little better with this Software. I’ve used it, and it did record good video - but when I used it, it recorded it in AVI format that created very large files, and my computer had issues when working with those files (and they don’t work in most video editing software.) I’ve since tried to tweak it to record AVI files, but have been having issues with the sound when doing that.

Xbox game bar also has screen record feature. It also seems to get good video, but I’ve also had issues with the sound on that as well. Probably just a setting I’ve got wrong somewhere, but I’ve not had time to dive into it and try to fix it.

Most graphics card software also have a screen record feature, though I can’t seem to find it on my Radeon software.

Yeah, I tried OBS, and while it’s a good program there are some issues. The largest is the file size. I just can’t can’t have 100GB video files for youtube videos. What I ultimately did is the obvious: I just rolled back to a previous version of GeForce Experience, and just like the driver, no more CTDs. GFE is just dead simple to use and provides good audio and video quality. That’s all I need. Hough I will say OBS looks amazing.
