You might want to check all the add ons by the NZA Simulations. They truly are awesome!
I visited NZ a year ago for the first time and I am happy to be able to go there in the sim even during this pandemic.

Is there any particular download that is a must have? 1 GB is a lot to give up.
I’m also enjoying the LOTR touring flight plans. Its amazing how flight simulation has evolved to make this an easy thing to do. For more immersion, get a soundtrack album and play it while flying.
Too bad we can’t alter soundtracks and add narration. This would be awesome for purchase. You fly it, a tour guide shows you all the points of interest while movie soundtracks are playing for the appropriate scene.
Can’t miss Milford sound, though I it might be difficult to land an SR22 can land there. I believe there’s also a freeware improvement package too on flightsim.to. It’s a spectacular place in RL.

It depends what kind of flying you like.
Wellington is very good place to explore both North and South Island. Napier is not too faraway.
Lake Tekapo is one of my favourites, great sceneries right there and not too far away from Milford Sound or Queenstown.
Rotorua is great also, but not other add on airports nearby.
You will end up downloading all of them…
