Hi there, I hope I’m posting in the proper forum, But where can I find a good website that teaches you basic ATC Phraseology and understand their meaning?
Any help or info is greatly appreciated. TIA
Hello @TheTwister7156,
Could look at this wiki for basics:
https://wiki.flightgear.org/ATC_phraseology
Otherwise, for more advance and official (USA) see:
https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/atpubs/aim_html/chap4_section_2.html
There may be more websites for the basic that others may know of.
To Note: The ATC in MSFS isn’t too accurate for worldwide phraseology (or even USA phraseology). But it’s a start!
You can search for VATSIM videos on Youtube. It’s pretty darn close to real life, in a Sim context.
Will particularly highlight Slant Alpha Adventures vid below:
That’s true, although someone did create a phraseology mod.
If anyone wants it, it’s at the bottom of this post, where it says “Get the phraseology mod here”. It’s US phraseology only. It’s not perfect because it works within the confines of MSFS’ ATC, but it’s a vast improvement and therefore much less distracting. Because it’s not perfect, I wouldn’t use it to “learn” phraseology, but if you know the correct phrasology, this would be a lot more familiar.
Unfortunately, because this isn’t an SDK-supported mod, you have to run the mod every time MSFS has an update.
@TheTwister7156 , if you want to learn phraseology, another option would be to visit LiveATC.net, find one of your local airports, and just listen to people talking. You will start to hear patterns in the way people speak, and you will get more comfortable hearing people speak quickly over the radio.
I might also point out Twotonemurphy, he is creator who has done lessons in live stream, and recorded on YouTube, plus he has written a document that you can follow along on which can be found at his website.
He has two series one which is aircraft terminologies and radio work around Visual Flying Rules flying rules. The second is expands and teaches you Instrument Flying Rules rules with goal of using Vatsim.
The information is free and has been supported by his community.
There’s also planeenglishsim.com, which actually lets you speak to the app and it grades your phraseology.
It’s payware, but they may have a free demo.
ATC Phraseology differs from country to country - the default ATC does not represent as how pilots interreact with ATC IRL (in terms of what they say or what ATC does). If however you are trying to get onto Vatsim/IVAO then I can offer following suggestion. Have a look at different videos on YouTube - there are several videos of controllers streaming live on network. Have look at these to get feel of what you can expect. Have a look at some good IRL videos too - Justplanes/Justpilots good channel where ATC communications can be heard.
If you like reading then I’d like point out CAP413 Radio telephony manual published by UK CAA - it explains everything that you need to know about what to say to ATC at various stages of the flight. You can get a PDF copy below - (https://www.caa.co.uk/publication/download/18165)
If your serious about learning it right, Pilotedge (paid) is the way to go or as others have mentioned VATSIM.
