The current character system in MSFS 2024 is heavily encrypted, making it incredibly challenging to reverse-engineer or work with. Despite these obstacles, we remain committed to enabling character mods and are dedicating significant time to this effort.
For context, introducing our Avitars in MSFS 2020 was no small feat. It took us three years to overcome similar encryption issues and the lack of working examples. Our Avitar system became the first and only character system to function natively within MSFS 2020, matching Asobo’s system. This breakthrough allowed custom characters to be rigged to Asobo’s animations and used seamlessly in any aircraft. It was a monumental achievement for our team, and once we cracked it, we poured hundreds of hours into creating unique and engaging content.
MSFS 2024, however, presents even greater challenges. The inclusion of clothing accessories, custom body types, faces, and even mouth animations tied to voice coding makes this system far more complex. Digging into it has been slow-going, and we’ve encountered even bigger barriers than we faced in MSFS 2020.
It’s frustrating because we see an incredible potential market for custom clothing, accessories, and even “animal companions” that would allow players to better personalize their characters. If we can eventually crack this system, the possibilities are endless. Imagine an “Avitar Builder” where users could mix and match custom shirts, pants, headwear, watches, tattoos, and more. It’s a long shot, but it’s the vision we’re working toward.
For now, though, the system remains too complex. We hope to achieve progress sooner than the three-year mark this time, or perhaps Asobo will step in to unlock the system’s full potential and make custom character content more accessible.
Here’s to hoping—and working toward—the day when we can bring back dogs, cats, and a fully customizable Avitar experience. Cheers!
