Yes, but that won’t be ChatGPT. It is just a language model. AI models for the actual problem domain of ATC are another matter - I’m sure that will get easier to do as cloud ML technology advances. Really it’s primarily a training and input issue. And with MSFS Microsoft could get a huge data set to train something on if it so chose. Going to an ML model as the core of a new ATC system for the sim would make a lot of sense.

Edit: (and slightly off-topic, so I’ll keep it short) equally, it should be possible to use an ML model to generate realistic evolving theme-based weather on demand. Imagine being able to say ‘I want realistic summer weather for this route assuming a flight date of 4th July’, for example. That would be awesome for those of us who want to fly with live-like weather but not the current live weather.

Yes but Jorg said that they wanted to acquire the Salty Simulations mod for the 747 but the lawyers wouldn’t let them because it contains some open source code. Just saying, nothing is straightforward when you have open source and commercial product.

I’ve recently picked up on the hype regarding ChatGPT and have been trying it for the last week. I’m frankly staggered (it has changed my expectations of what is possible) and a little bit unnerved by the potential of AI.

So I thought I’d ask ChatGPT how AI could improve flight simulation for hobbyists:

AI is a perfect match for ATC.
There’s tons and tons of data to feed the learning process and also, ATC follows a strict set of rules that makes it predictive.
It should be peanuts for AI to handle any given ATC situation.

In fact, I bet even real life ATC will become AI driven in the future.
It doesn’t experience stress, can handle higher workloads and is much safer than humans.

ChatGPT listed benefits of using itself for AI ATC - ask it what the downside is.

My vote also is on this - it really could make things (technically) easier on MSFS especially when it comes down to regional phraseology.

On the professional GPT version you could surely just provide a regional code and it will take care of the correct phrases - combined with Azure for voices (and accents → https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/use-azure-to-give-atc-regional-accents) plus voice recognition this could be a pure dream for anyone not into Vatsim or people training for entering Vatsim :slight_smile:

For Microsoft it could act as a training sandbox (again) and a POC, so they’d also benefit from this. The only issue I see is to “slow down” communication especially when it comes to live traffic - ChatGPT at least takes some moments to phrase the answer, but that’s also a human factor so it’s totally fine.

However current ATC is just babbling without pauses leaving no room for players to interact and even crashing the existing ATC system at some point.

Anyway I see a big win for both MS and us players on this - it could make MSFS also useful for actual ATC training if done right :wink:

Definitely a huge POC opportunity for MS. They should train it on Kennedy Steve’s transcripts and recordings. Using AI voice-engine models, they could simulate his voice and cadence. I bet it would even heckle pilots and crack jokes on its own.

Great, now I want to go back to school for AI science just so I can recreate Kennedy Steve in MSFS and have him heckle me at JFK.

I had the same thought and found this thread via a search -

Voice ChatGPT could act as all parties - Tower, Approach , and other AI traffic pilots. They can have dialogue between each other that the player can hear and interact with them by voice on the radio channel - it can inject a new voice and personality for each party, and random personality can be ranged based on aircraft type - perhaps you might occasionally hear a new general aviation VFR AI pilot who is a bit slower or unsure and has to ask ATC to repeat occassionally. Accents can be injected to the personalities based on controller location or AI traffic airline. All parties can speak and respond in real time to each other’s voice messages, aircraft movements, weather changes, etc. One AI voice system could be used for a multiplayer group flight, so everyone can hear each other and seamlessly interact with each other and the various AI-controlled parties (controllers, AI traffic).

This is obviously somewhat ambitious but I believe it is technically possible with the current tech, which is part owned by Microsoft. And it would be pretty amazing!

Undoubtedly, based on where we are today with AI, it looks possible in the near future, but realistically at what cost .

The Computing power would be enormous when scaled for the numbers in the MSFS community,

There is both the development cost, server costs, as well as the daily bandwidth.

Would MSFS users “expect” this all to be FREE, or would they accept paying an “ATC Per Use” Fee.

An “ATC per Use” Fee might not be so “Unrealistic” - In many countries pilots pay for each interaction they have with ATC.

I don’t think anyone would expect such a revolutionary and compute intensive system to be free - agreed it would probably make sense as an optional subscription, on a per-month or per-flight basis, to temporarily rent the compute space on Azure or whatever.

Martial said on the live stream yesterday that ATC changes were very hard and slow, as even minor changes required massive amounts of code change. And given MS’ investment in OpenAI it made me wonder if they should be at least be considering instead investing time in rebuilding towards a truly next gen and future proof system like this

Microsoft has his own AI and, in my opinion, has the power to implement new ATC with new IA functions similar gpt-4. I think this idea could be a new revolutionary way to fly.

Integrated speach to text regognition fed into chatgpt language model for AI controller would increase immersion.

The technology we have now is sooo ready dor this!

We’re told MSFS2024 will have improved ATC - if they can match this it’ll be mind blowing!

What I have in mind is integrated with MSFS 2024. Voice to text, linked to ChatGPT language model for human-computer interaction.

AI should hopefully be able to react to ATC communication, such as slowing, holding etc. Same goes for ground vehicles… Oh those ground vehicles.
