GPU and CPU for MSFS 2024

Cheers mates,

while I am near the end with my GTX1060 and i5-9400, it is long overdue to upgrade my system to be able to run MSFS 2024. Furthermore I’d add X-Plane 12 on that list, though MSFS is the main consideration.
Anyways, so I was wondering what CPU and GPU I should get. Naturally I would like to buy the 7800x3d, however given the price at the moment, I find the Ryzen 5 7600x3d more competative for the money. Now that the CPU is sorted out, what do you think of the GPU.
I am willing to get the 7800xt but have heard mixed opinions on that, regarding stability etc DLSS… Or should I invest around 150 (in my area) euros more for the 4070 super, that in benchmarks ranks pretty much the same but seems better for some reason given the public opinion? Or is that maybe just an MSFS thing with the DLSS 3 and FSR upgrades? Is the 4070 super really worth over the 7800xt?

Also to be noted, I intend to use full hd 1080p only.

Any recommendation or opinion is highly appreciated.

Regards

In the thread nearby we’re discussing just that and I’ve already listed all the MSFS benchmarks I know  I suggest you come around, click them, and look at the reviews that might give you a good understanding of what to choose.

So what is your opinion about the desired system I have mentioned?

I can’t really say because I’m not familiar with the Radeon GPUs.

Yeah thats the thing. I am looking for someone who either has those or has a lot of experience in that. Those “Statistics” are very biased, you never know what your performance is going to be like with addons and what not. So I’d be cautious using all those benchmarks. Especially in MSFS or X-Plane.

I currently have 2 sim PC’s - one with a 7900x3d cpu/7900xtx gpu w/24gig vram. The second has a 5900x cpu/7700xt gpu with 12gig vram.

The 7800xt that you are considering is what I would consider an entry level AMD gpu for 4k gaming with its rasterization capabilities and 16gig of vram. Entry level here means less than all ultra sim settings. The 4070 Super I would consider a high end 2k (1440p) gaming gpu with 12gig vram. I would not recommend the 4070 Super for 4k due to only having 12gig of vram. As I’ve seen with my 7700xt when I run it in 4k, once the vram fills up, the sim starts to stutter and that will break your immersion.

So the 7800xt that you are considering would crush any game in 1080p and give you a LOT of headroom in the future to run 2k or 4k. The 4070 Super would be fantastic for either 1080p or 2k. The key with the sim (2020 or 2024) is that it eats a ton of vram so the more you have the better (see my explanation above).

If you are only going to run 1080p and maybe some 1440p then you may want to consider a less expensive AMD 7700xt or a Nvidia 4060. The 7700xt will be a little cheaper than the 4060 and is the more powerful of the 2 gpu’s. All of the 7000 series AMD gpu’s support frame gen and FSR2 which is the equivalent of Nvidia’s DLSS. Nvidia’s frame gen is currently supported natively within the sim (2020 or 2024) and AMD’s is easily turned on via their Adrenalin software. I find FSR2 and frame gen to work very well with the sim (2020 or 2024).

Thanks a lot for the reply. This definately clears up some questions I had. I’d like to hear your opinion whether you think the 5 7600x3d is a good CPU to pair with a 7700xt or 7800xt. As I said I initially planned for the 7800x3d, but I don’t see any reason to pay around 200 euros more (in my area) for just a slight gain. Or is the gain perhaps bigger? Or would you have an entirely different suggestion?

Regards.

I believe the 7600x3d with some fast DDR5-6000 memory will pair very well with either the 7700xt or the 7800xt to run the sim in 1080p or 1440p. The 7800xt will give you more future proofing with the 16gig of vram so I would go with that gpu if your budget can accommodate it.

I would avoid expensive cpu coolers and go with something like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE or the Phantom Spirit 120. Both will provide solid bang for your buck. I would also recommend a PC case that has great airflow and is not too small. Don’t skimp on a good quality power supply also - you can find calculators on the web where you input your pc components and it will recommend the psu wattage you should select (then add 100w for future upgrades).

Good luck and have fun with your new build!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Actually I thought of the same CPU cooler. I’ll definately keep those build ideas in mind. I’ll go with a 850W and most likely the 7800xt btw because of the VRAM. I will let you know how it goes.
