GPU and CPU utilisation in FS2024

Hi so I haven’t bought the sim yet. I’m a VR user and was waiting for reviews, which as we all know have been generally awful so far with the botched launch.

However one review I saw, and I’ve heard this elsewhere too, is that fs2024 is not maximising performance of hardware and so performance headroom is being left on the table.

Fs2020 looked great in VR, the only issue for me really was performance. Wasn’t one of the key factors in the 2024 release to be using multi threading to unleash alot of performance headroom? So where is the improved performance?

I expect a demanding game to be maximising capability of hardware. Is this a case of optimised for xbox maybe, and PC/VR optimisation being ignored?

Hard to know what that means absent detailed metrics. However, in general, I do not find that to be the case on my system. I see GPU usage at 80 - 98% most of the time, and CPU usage at about 50 - 60% depending on scenery, traffic, weather, etc. I do note that all 16 of my virtual cores are running at 60 - 80% on FS2024, as opposed to one core nearly pegged and the rest sort of just idling along in FS2020. My general performance is also amazingly more fluid and smooth-feeling in ‘24 as opposed to ‘20.

Every user’s experience will vary of course.

The reviewer was getting only 40-50% utilisation on a high end system of both CPU and GPU. I’ve heard similar numbers elsewhere too.

Oh, well, that certainly trumps my personal experience. Silly me.

Not at all, I appreciate your reply and glad to hear you’re getting full usage.

On my system there is definitely a lot less jitter with 2024. Ie. the frames are more evenly spaced.
In 2020, even though someone might be doing 60fps or more, it would often not look fluid – due to the micro stutters whenever main-thread core is momentarily diverted to another task. Whereas In 2024 I don’t see these micro-stutters – presumably thanks to the new multi-core engine.

My experience with 2024 is it is much smoother than 2020, together with better visuals. GPU is almost near 100% all the time and I see all my cores are being used. Whereas in 2020, half my cores would park.

Hi, I haven’t purchased the 2024 yet, cuz I kinda feel unsure about the performance. Since I saw you have a PC that’s literally identical to mine(mines got a RTX 4070, but not planning to use frame gen since there are some minor stuttering and flickering that hurt my eyes), may I ask how much FPS you get on average? Also, did you use any add-ons like the Fenix A320 or the FSLTL traffic mod? Thanks!

You can get a 14 day trial Game Pass subscription for $1 and you can cancel at any time. It’s great if you want to just try MSFS 2024 and see the performance for yourself. You can even install it alongside 2020 without any issues.

Not sure if I am reading too late: do NOT purchase.
I do fly only VR, and I have top end rig (14700K with 4090), and the utilization it absolute trash.

You go from 98% GPU down to 30 as soon as the CPU does need to do something (not sure what): you have then the CPU going from 15 to 80%, which pushed the GPU down to the 30s. As a result, you get game-braking stutters.

This happens most of the time when you approach the ground for landing once you are ending a typical flight. And it is completely unrelated to the graphical settings, or the area: it happens in the middle of a desert with a tiny airstrip too.

I tried everything and gave up

Concur, do NOT purchase. Among other several issues, there’s a known VRAM bug, which is scheduled for SU2, who knows when that will come, and if it will be effectively fixed. It’s all over the place, performance with airliners and big airports is miles worse than in 2020.

Repeat, do not purchase until it’s stable, which appparently will take awhile. Please do read the part of “Repeat, do not purchase” as in the A320 TCAS alert, and assume that “Clear of conflict” will come in several months.

Sounds much better

Could not have said this better…that is also one of the worse part: you have no idea whatsoever WHEN and IF the upcoming patches will actually solve the numerous issues.

Neither my CPU nor my GPU are anywhere near fully utilised in msfs2024 (particularly my CPU), I am almost fully out of VRAM (though the RTX3080 only has 10 GB). I am also using most of my 32 GB system RAM most if the time.

I am planning on upgrading my GPU soon, though the costs of a 5000 series or even a 4090 are out of the question atm. With regard to system RAM, an upgrade to 64 GB DDR5 RAM from my 32 GB DDR4 RAM will have to wait until ny next full system rebuild

if it help you, I have this issue with my 4090. so changing the GPU might actually not fix this

How is the performance either on landing or approaching an airfield / lower altitudes? Right now on 2020 my fps is decent at altitude (with some small stutters) but gets painful below 10K’, sometimes unplayable on landing, and that is with 13600K and 7900xtx. Win 11 24H2.

There must be something wrong there because I’m on a 5800X3D 6800XT and while I might have hiccups, it’s in no wat unplayable. At worst in a heavy airport and a heavy airplane (Fenix/KLAX) I have hiccups and framerate drops to 15, but lowering LOD gives a reasonable experience. With your setup you should have a much better performance.

Going to performance in 2024, some things are kinda weird. Small airports like Yrausquin or St. Barths are full of hiccups and stutters even with simple airplanes (Twin Otter). Some other do not give serious issues.

Since in 2024 everything is streamed, you might face assets popping up while you spawn or taxi (happens to me all the time).

If you give a specific setting (location, airplane) I can test performance, knowing my setup you’ll get an idea. Anyway, there’s something wrong on your setup, you can’t have that bad performance with that setup (well you don’t specify, but I guess that even with three monitors and 4k you should run fine below FL10).

It’s a lot of different airports, including some small ones that I am trying for variety. 2 things I need to try to rule out, one is easy.

  • I’m running 2 touch screens off of the built in CPU based video (HDMI & display port connections from the motherboard). I think it’s separate transistors but I wonder if that’s bogging the CPU down too much. I need to disconnect those for a flight and try it out.
  • Win 11 24H2 I’ve read through the thread on that, and it seems like for some people it is causing perf issues.
    1. I wish 2024 was good enough to feel like I can upgrade, but it’s not.
