GPU or CPU?

Hi, i need some help to choose between CPU or GPU.

I have an low/mid range setup atm, if i had the money i would change both of them.
I can run the sim with alot of “ULTRA” settings, but in VR i got stutters and “ghosting”

CPU: Intel I5 8400K
GPU: Zotac Extreme AMP GTX 1080 8GB
Motherboard: ASUS Prime H-310 Plus
Mem: Crucial DDR4 32GB

I should think upgrading your cpu through ebay would be pretty cheap, maybe not the best but the 2nd best that your chipset (and cpu slot) supports. However for VR you really need to upgrade your graphics to an rtx2060 or better to take avantage of DLSS, I suggest it has at least 8GB of Vram but 6 will probably do.

Hi, yeah im currently looking at an RTX 3070 OC 8GB pretty cheap on eBAY.

Thanks for your input.

Just save your money and upgrade both.

Yeah, that was my idea also, but then i have another issue. My mobo only supports 8/9 generation CPU, so i can only put in eg: Intel i7-8700. i7-8700K and i7-8700T. That’s the highest i can go.

Depends what you want to invest. The CPU is arguably the most important for MSFS, as most people are mainthread limited on DX11. However, it will only be a worthwhile upgrade to a later generation. As you’ve already pointed out, you’re limited to upgrading to an 8th gen without changing sockets. I do not think it’s worth your time or money to upgrade to an 8700k, as performance improvement would probably be barely noticeable. If you want to do it right, you should really consider an 12th generation, but this obviously requires a new motherboard.

Hehe, yeah it seems that I’m heading that way.
I going to look for a cheap 12th Gen CPU, and then a decent motherboard after that.

If you want to save money, you could also consider a 10th or 11th gen. Personally, I would go with 12th gen, as they have some significant gains over previous generations and would allow for an upgrade path to 13th gen.

Come mid September RTX graphics cards will flood eBay.

So i have looked now at 12th Gen CPU’s, if i get it right here: i5-12600K is almost same as i7-12600K ?? the i5 has 6 cores, and i7 have 10…i look at CPU compare…and the price for the i5 is much lower.

This is what i have looked at:
CPU: Intel i5-12600K for around €280
Mobo: Around €100 (DDR4) because i have that today.

Indeed, go with DDR4. There’s no performance gain of DDR5 vs DDR4 for gaming. In fact, some games have a performance loss because latency on DDR5 is still significantly higher than DDR4.

From 4GHz to 4.7GHz the 8700k single core performance uplift would be quite considerable for games such as MSFS so IMO selling his cpu and upgrading through ebay would be well worthwhile if his budget is a concern.

So if i understand this right.
1:st thing to do is to change CPU & Mobo (to get more calculations in MSFS)
2:nd Change GPU
?

Normally yes. Something else to consider is monitor size, high end gpus don’t perform too well in 1080p as mainthread only gets hammered (stutters) and LODs would need to be low, a 3070 with your current cpu would be very borderline IMO.
