GPU usage - Low FPS and No DLSS on a 4090

Are you using Developer Mode or made changes in it?

Issue exists whether in dev mode or not. I do use it occasionally to find variable and event names while developing instruments for Air Manager.

Have you disabled/removed all your mods and addons? If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the Community Support section.

Yes, the issue also happens with a plain vanilla sim, no add-ons or community folder entries.

Brief description of the issue:

Frame rates are terrible (~20’s) and I can’t select DLSS as an option in the graphics menu. Granted I have a lot of pixels to generate (see specs below) but I also have the horsepower that used to be able to get me 50-60FPS with the exact same parameters. I suspect there’s an issue with properly identifying the primary graphics card in my system. It does partially work in the sense that in my UserCfg.opt file, it shows my RTX4090 and also in Task Manager, it shows that GPU0 (the 4090) is running FlightSimulator.exe. I just can’t use DLSS, or Frame Generation either, for that matter. It does provide me with the option to use AMD FSR 2, but I don’t even have an AMD graphics card. I do have my AMD IGPU disabled in BIOS. It doesn’t show up in the Device Manager list (see screenshot).

I suspect the issue stems from the fact that I also have an Intel ARC A380 in my system, along with a USB to HDMI converter (It’s a Startech branded one that shows up as Trigger 6 External Graphics under Display Adapters). The Intel and USB adapter are used for 5 external touch monitors that I use for my Air Manager instruments.

I believe the issue started with Sim Update 14, and most definitely the smoothness got worse with SU14. I’ve had very choppy/stuttering graphics, particularly in my main, central display. The two displays on each side appear smoother.
Also, I have tried to “steer” applications and add-ons to use a particular GPU (in Windows11 System->Display->Graphics menu) to free up as many resources as possible for the 4090 to render the sim. I can verify that the 4090 is running the sim by looking at Task Manager. But even after removing this “steering” executables towards specific GPUs, the issue persists.

If I disable the USB adapter, frame rates are back to ~60 and DLSS becomes an option. So it’s obviously something with the drivers for the USB adapter but ALSO something in the way that MSFS is assigning rendering tasks.

Detailed steps to reproduce the issue encountered:

See above but basically run the sim with or without any addons and frame rates are terrible, along with DLSS not being available. Removing USB adapter “fixes” the issue BUT… I still would regard this as an MSFS bug though because of the way it is handling the rendering tasks and disallowing DLSS to be used on a top-of-the-line Nvidia graphics card.

Many issues may be due to an outdated graphics card. Please state your Graphics Card Driver Manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) and Version (Learn how to find your current graphics card driver version):

Nvidia v551.46

<@776166087485685790> I don’t have your problem but I am using a usb- HDMI adapter for my two Realism Gear monitors. Here’s a description of my problem.

Has anyone experienced the problem after flying for 10 minutes or so, in my system resources, it says WUDFHost.exe is using over 80% of my Ram. At the same time the sim is stuttering so bad you can’t play. The only fix I have is to close the process tree for WUDFHost.exe. everything works fine after that. However, give it 10 or 20 minutes, it will do the same thing. I know WUDFHost.exe has something to do with drivers. I was able to identify that when I popped out my two screens for my G1000, that’s when the usage starts to increase. Any help would be appreciative.

Here are my specs

I’m fairly certain there are no duplicates. I did a search. And I followed the rules by filling out the template. Not sure why this wouldn’t be classified as a bug.

Understandably, it’s a pretty rare corner case as there probably aren’t lots of people with the same setup. That’s probably why it hasn’t been mentioned before.

I suspect @PapaNastys issue is related. I’ve seen the WUDFhost.exe in relation to the USB adapter. Pretty sure that’s what the sim is using to render when the USB adapter is in place.

We are getting almost the same problems. Mine started mid or late December.
I’m running a Win11 Home Alienware AreaM51 laptop with Intel Core i9-9900 CPU, 32 GB Ram, NVidia RTX 2800 video and Alienware(Dell) AW 3420DW 34" curved monitor. The cable connecting the monitor and laptop is a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

Q: What / where are you finding and removing your “USB Adapter” to test.
I did note in my System Information that my NVIDIA adapter and PCI EXPRESS Downstream Switch port both use the same memory address, but don’t know if any of that means anything.
Also I have watched and applied in every permutation possible all graphics related videos on YouTube going back two months.

Memory Address 0xB9F00000-0xB9F0FFFF Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10 (Microsoft)

I was using one of these:

Removing it took me from 22FPS to 55-60FPS and brought back DLSS as an option for my 4090 GPU.

Are you not able to select DLSS either?

I’m using NVIDIA DLSS SUPER RESOLUTION. Still getting 9 to 18 FPS, sometimes up to 30 and 44 for short periods.
