Grab your Wicker Chairs, its gonna be a LONG flight

On November 12, 7:52 AM, in one week from this post, I will be recreating the famous Spirit of St Louis flight from New York to Paris, on Twitch, to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of my Favourite flight sim!

The flight should take between 33 and 40 hours, and will be accomplished in real time, in real (sim) weather. You are all welcome to join me, Twitch However, I do ask that nobody spoil the adventure. You see, I will be accomplishing this under as real of conditions as I can. That means I won’t be using any kind of GPS or Radio navigation, just as Lindbergh did on his original journey. This flight will be entirely dead reckoning. I have even purchased a wicker chair to experience the horrible comfort that Lindberg endured nearly 100 years ago! I even have PRINTED maps, and a physical E6B that I will be using to help navigate.

There are a couple of creature comforts I will have that Lindbergh didn’t tho. I have written an add-on autopilot that I can use for bio breaks. Unlike Lindbergh, my facilities are a few steps away, and my dog needs relatively frequent walks. In that AP, I have also included a save state mechanism that will save my location, speed, heading, and fuel levels, and can restore them in the case of a CTD. Computers are simply not as stable as The Spirit’s Wright Whirlwind engine!

So come fly with me, at least for parts of the journey! Keep me company. We will be chatting about the real Lindbergh flight, as well as anything otherwise airplane related.

Best Wishes on your flight! But assign yourself 2 extra “preflight” hours in the wicker chair for using an E6B about 10 years before it was invented! Toss that bad boy out the window! :grinning::grinning::grinning:
But really, do have a great time. My dogs become my LIMFAC for a lot of things.
Regards

Indeed, a lot of his planning was by feel for the wind! Still, ancient tech.

@BlueYonder9259. Hello, Congratulations on your project, but which airfield will you take off from? Roosevelt airfield doesn’t exist anymore!!! Do you use the “Flight Sim Squadron” plane? Thank you for your answers and maybe see you soon in the air.

My plan is to launch from JFK. It’s pretty close but a tad further away. The Spirit releases with the 40th anniversary update tomorrow so I plan to use that one.

It’s probably too late to change, but what about launching from KFRG Republic Airport in Islip instead? It’s a smidge closer to the old Roosevelt Field than JFK, but it is further east on Long Island, so it’ll shorten your trip by a couple miles.

…can you tell I grew up on Long Island?

Awesome, I will try to drop in. Good luck!

I could. From a practical sense, none of the airports are grass, and fairly short (by todays standards), so its cheating either way.

It’s too bad there’s no Roosevelt Field scenery to download.

There’s only one grass strip left on the island, and it’s near the east end, nowhere near Roosevelt Field.
