On November 12, 7:52 AM, in one week from this post, I will be recreating the famous Spirit of St Louis flight from New York to Paris, on Twitch, to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of my Favourite flight sim!
The flight should take between 33 and 40 hours, and will be accomplished in real time, in real (sim) weather. You are all welcome to join me, Twitch However, I do ask that nobody spoil the adventure. You see, I will be accomplishing this under as real of conditions as I can. That means I won’t be using any kind of GPS or Radio navigation, just as Lindbergh did on his original journey. This flight will be entirely dead reckoning. I have even purchased a wicker chair to experience the horrible comfort that Lindberg endured nearly 100 years ago! I even have PRINTED maps, and a physical E6B that I will be using to help navigate.
There are a couple of creature comforts I will have that Lindbergh didn’t tho. I have written an add-on autopilot that I can use for bio breaks. Unlike Lindbergh, my facilities are a few steps away, and my dog needs relatively frequent walks. In that AP, I have also included a save state mechanism that will save my location, speed, heading, and fuel levels, and can restore them in the case of a CTD. Computers are simply not as stable as The Spirit’s Wright Whirlwind engine!
So come fly with me, at least for parts of the journey! Keep me company. We will be chatting about the real Lindbergh flight, as well as anything otherwise airplane related.
