Back in FSX, building a custom flight plan was simple… departure/arrival airports selected…then if you wanted to customize the route, you simply “grabbed” the course line with your mouse, dragged it to where you wanted a “waypoint”, released the mouse and VOILA, the waypoint was added.
Not all of us want to fly only “direct” or default routes, …PLEASE make the course line adjustable!
Anyone here remembers Flight Sim World’s (RIP) world map? It was very similar to MSFS 2020’s. You would choose a point of Departure and point of Arrival and the sim would calculate your flight plan for you in the background. I don’t think you ever actually saw much detail.
Now, I know the professional simmers hated that. They seem to enjoy all that messing about with the FMS and shenanigans with procedures, etc. Me? I loved it. Simple. Easy. Did what it said on the tin - and no need for all that fussy technical stuff.
MSFS 2020 does something similar to FSW, but strangely, it lacks one vital component - in FSW, once you’d plotted your ‘A’ to ‘B’ and the line had been drawn, you could click anywhere on that line and add further points, to ‘bend’ the A-to-B flight path and create imaginary vectors along the route - which your plane would follow.
This would be a very useful addition to MSFS 2020’s world map. For instance, I was just flying across Réunion island (-20.892170, 55.518036) from the airport in the north to the airport in the south and rather than go straight across the island (which would mean an immediate climb up to 10,000ft to avoid a couple of massive great volcanic cones) I would have appreciated the option to click in a few vectors to take me around the bigger of the two volcanos, maintaining a reasonable altitude around the island - a route that would actually give me a far better approach into my destination.
Nice to see a another post from someone who likes “simpler”. I feel that we have gotten a visually amazing sim that sacrificed the parts of FS9 (the “simpler” aspects) that actually worked well. Flight planning is one of them. (See my other posts about hiding the cockpit, raising the seat, even 2D when it’s easier at times)
To add to your post- why are the relevant frequencies…ILS/VOR etc …not on the world map you bring up with “V”? Why not have them on the initial flight plan page when you set your arrival airport?? Why not be able to create and file a flight plan after you take off like you could in FS?
EXACTLY. I want it exactly like this, nothing different. Make it as easy as possible not hard as hell. Please Asobo, DO IT AS ONE OF FIRST THING TO NEW PATCH.
I absolutely agree with you. Make the “boring bits” simple so we can get to the “fun bits” (i.e. flying). I know many simmers like the nitty gritty of such details, but to each their own.
You can already kind of do what you are talking about. Once you pick your destination and arrival AP’s, click on a navaid or another airport then click ADD. It will bend the route. You can add til your heart is content.
I think you must turn on NAVAIDS in the filters dialog at the bottom of the world map.
Yes, I tried that today. Found you have to add in reverse order - starting from destination back to departure - which is odd. But good to know about the filter. Will check it out. Thanks
Flight Planning in MSFS is wonderful but could use some help.
The inclusion of SIDS/STARS is one of the best things ever! Going through PDFs to find the right routes is serious research.
MSFS is a historic masterwork!
Other Flight Planning tools like Skyvector allow one to ‘Click and drag and SNAP’ to the nearest WPT, VOR, Airport. This feature would be a nice addition as MSFS doe not always ADD points exactly where one would like.
When creating a flight plan in MSFS, the ROUTE of Waypoints appears at the top of the screen and in the NAV LOG. It would be nice to be able to TYPE-IN, ADD and REMOVE Waypoints, VOR, Airports and even coordinates into the TEXT display at the top or in the NAV-LOG. Or even CLICK & SLIDE waypoints in the Text display or Nav Log.
This feature alone would be nice and allow one to correct MSFS adding in route points in the right sequence.
I think it would be handy to to set up a to and from route but have the ability to click and drag the route in between where you want it to be. To often when attempting to use multiple waypoints the map will change the route to suit what it thinks the way it should be.
