I am not sure if I can fully agree with that statement. In my experience, the Xbox Series X is truly capable of exceptional performance. I’ve logged many hours on it, and it can sometimes deliver smooth, impressive graphics. I’ve had stable and reliable flights with complex aircraft like the PMDG 737, JF BAe 146, and A2A’s Comanche, along with superb airports like NZWN, KBOS…
Yes, I’ve encountered plenty of crashes and black screens as well, but I suspect there’s something more at play. Occasionally, the entire graphics engine seems to throttle down, not just in SU15. The LOD, texture quality, and size sometimes degrade significantly out of nowhere ( From servers side?) . If you avoid overusing the drone camera and stay in the cockpit, this console can perform wonders—when msfs wants to work properly.
What puzzles me is why I can’t seem to complete two different flights in a row without running into performance and graphics issues. Often, it’s necessary to close MSFS and reboot the console to achieve an acceptable experience. It feels like the memory isn’t being cleared or recycled properly (?)After finishing a flight and returning to the main menu to start a new one, I’d expect the memory to be freed up, but this isn’t usually the case. Instead, it seems that if you do several flights without rebooting, the memory seems to be filled much quicker.
To me, this points to a programming issue, particularly with the memory management system, which SU15 was supposed to address. IMHO, the job is not done!
MAYBE Long term stability, and the ability to run a complex “Game” for hours at a time, without Bogging dowm is NOT the design goal of a games Console, that typically run a game for a short time, before the player’s attention span wanders off, and they switch to another “game”.
It’s may well just be, in the end, that different types of games, require differently designed hardware & OS ? – or the game has to be shoe boxed and limited to fit in the least “appropriate” system , where Appropriate is not necessarily CPU processing power.
Nothing wrong with that – you just need the right tools to get the job done, as is true in so many aspects of real life.
I’ve been using game consoles, and worked in games development on several of them, since the invention of home Atari Pong.
This is simply an untrue statement.
In the case of MSFS 2020, I initially played it on an Xbox Series S for quite sometime until I could get my hands on a Series X when they were scarce.
It was AWESOME on that console and it is what made me absolutely fall in love with flight simming all over again.
It could handle this sim without an issue, at that time. The changes made to the sim over time have just stretched the hardware’s limits and are showing its weaknesses, but that isn’t because the console wasn’t designed to play a complex game for endless hours.
It frustrates me when people who don’t own consoles weigh in on what they perceive to be their inabilities. These things are essentially PCs that have a very focused purpose and that is to play video games, however complex.
On what are you basing this statement? Xbox players (regardless of their preferred games) have lengthy play sessions just like PC gamers do, and there are many console owners who dedicate their recreation time to only one or two titles rather than jumping between many different games.
At a high level, an Xbox and a PC are almost identical from a hardware and software perspective, with the main differences between the two being the design of the user interface. Xbox Series X and S consoles are powered by an AMD CPU and GPU and use an SSD drive for storage, just like many PCs. The Xbox System OS is a modified version of Windows with a UI designed and optimized to run on a television screen and to be controlled with a gamepad rather than a mouse and keyboard (although mouse+kb input is supported on Xbox for those who want it). The Xbox uses the same DirectX API for game development as Windows PCs. In fact, that’s how the console got its name – early during the first Xbox’s creation, it was originally known internally at Microsoft as the “DirectX Box” which was then shortened to Xbox when marketed to the public.
I bought an x-series only for msfs and I only use msfs, never used another title besides msfs, please solve this problem of textures, loading and graphics, I would not like to give up this simulator, I sincerely love it, it allows me to keep my passion going.
To get back on-topic for a bit: today I made a flight again, after a good week or so playing with my new toy (77" LG G4 OLED Evo, which is awesome by the way). I was fully prepared for a really underwhelming experience based on some comments about the graphic fidelity being much decreased.
So, I took the LVFR A320 CEO and departed from Asobo EDDF with 3rd party ENGM as it’s destination. Lufthansa flight 866. Nice 1h45 minutes flight, just how I like it.
To be honest, I really enjoyed myself again. No stutters(even at busy EDDF with live traffic enabled ), no BS and certainly no CTD.
Offcourse, the “normal” issues were visible. Late pop-up of ground signings while taxiing, some odd looking AI aircraft etc. But I’m used to that, it was like this during the whole beta phase and before that. . I even found the TLOD acceptable, especially above 10.000ft.
It was a nice trouble free flight, with a nice butter landing after a great ILS approach to Oslo Gardermoun airport. Which is a very, very nice 3rd party addon I have to say.
In other words, I can’t recognize myself in the title of this topic. But I want to make absolutely clear that I respect everyone opinion. Especially when you only fly low and slow GA type of stuff.
This is only for a little bit of meters, before it was like this yes, but at like 20 thousand feet.
I can tell the difference because I fly to the same places so many times at different times
Yes it was discussed but it was decent then, I as well as many others can notice the difference after su15 and the Xbox update which decreases the textures as mentioned in the 'update, only it was done drastically. Also always before su15 I never had crashes, stutter, floating planes, taxy way not visible and fogged textures. I’m not here to waste time for sure, otherwise I wouldn’t have opened this topic, don’t try to normalize this problem, for me like many others after thousands of bought addons it’s a serious thing, thanks.
There is only so much you can cram into a fixed 16GB system. At some point you will have to start throwing stuff out to make it stable.
That or only stream what is required, as FS2024 is designed to do which of course means you will have to keep your head still and only look forward or witness the degraded terrain on the sides.
I fully agree with you.
I puzzle over how RC works on the Xbox ( I still have to hear a good technical explanation - it was apparently the workaround for .17 but why?) as well as how Reserved Space on Xbox works. For example you can uninstall an aircraft or WU or CU using Content Manager only to find that the MSFS load time increases. Edit - even though it’s a time consuming process, it’s worth clearing out Xbox Reserved space every so often as it can make a difference - Why? How can that be? It implies poor use of space, maybe some leakage, and some opportunities to improve the Xbox user experience.
Why the .17 beta was dropped - “we couldn’t find the reason for the stutters”. Having just said thst RC was the workaround…. It doesn’t make any sense to me, feels like they just put it down and moved on when a few extra hours of effort would probably have paid dividends.
You really need to stop using this as any test for any recent issues introduced with SU15, this zoom in/out straight down image test has been an issue for ages. Was a huge thread on it somewhere.
