For those that love to fly high in the US here is a really cool weather map that has options at the bottom. I know it’s not exactly like the sim but from my view the sim has weather that is sorta close to reality.
Do we know if this is modeled in game with the weather engine? While the weather has improved for me, it still seem delayed compared to what’s outside.
Real world weather apps are really hit or miss since the MSFS weather is based on a forecast model that’s 12+ hours old vs actual real time conditions. Like any forecast, it may be correct, it may not be. So at best you might luck into weather and winds actually matching up to real world atmospheric conditions, or being at least somewhat similar. But much of the time, the variation is enough to render real world meteorological charts either useless or of very limited value.
Hopefully the SU7 overhaul of the weather system helps with this. It would be nice to be able to rely on real world tools that pilots actually use.
I was a weather man in the Air Force. Been looking at weather maps ever since. Also Accuweather has the best national radar, but like the other guy said, the in- sim weather is only sorta close to the weather in the real world. I put the 3 MB map up side by side with the sim weather, and broad-brush it looks like they kind’a compare. but not dead the same. But a lot can change in 12 hours if the sim weather is a forecast from 12 hours ago.
Indeed. As an amateur astronomer and astrophotographer, I spend quite a bit of time going through various weather charts and services for my local areas. And a fair portion of the time, the weather is “close enough” in MSFS to what’s out there. Temperatures are typically pretty close. Cloud cover may not always match perfectly. Precipitation may not be totally accurate, but like you said, broad-brush, it’s similar. Sometimes it’s a night and day difference, but most times it’s reasonably similar.
However, when it comes to winds, that can have a major impact on flying. Using real world real-time reports in the sim is a crapshoot. Especially when the weather generated in the sim is based on a forecast model 12+ hours old.
They spoke about this in the last Q&A. It seems like they’re trying to use a more timely forecast model (still not real time) and to blend it with real time METAR reports from airports to generate the sim weather. And this is supposed to land in SU7. Or at least the initial steps for it. I’m sure it will take some time to work the bugs out though.
I think that page is just intended to be a teaching example of how these charts work. That’s not reliable data you should actually be using, whether simming or in real life. Notice, for example, the cyclone off the east coast is entirely missing.
This is the same type of data that Flight Simulator actually uses (supposedly, and if the sim is correctly functioning):
