Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

@kityatyi Well, that would be me, and thank you very much. Glad you’re enjoying it!

Plenty of great info on the plane throughout this extensive thread as well.

Thanks again and happy flying.

That’s amazing, the developer himself replies to a random forum post within minutes! Hats off! Not quite the norm! Often payware devs don’t reply even after weeks.

You should serously consider doing payware stuff (of course not for the reason to be excused for not replying for weeks, haha), but because your work speaks volumes; of passion, dedication, talent! Once again, thank you for the prompt reply! Now off to fly the Albatross!

yeah this isn’t a your normal ‘default’ aircraft. in fact i dont know any other individual devs this active for a default plane

One quick question, does this a/c has a water rudder of any sort?

@kityatyi Nope, but the props are fully reversible, so you can turn using differential thrust. You might need to set up your physical throttles to best take advantage of the reverse range (there are several posts in this thread about that), but you can practice just by dragging the throttles in the virtual cockpit. It takes some practice, but offers a lot of control once you get the hang of it.

Thank you kindly - I already have such a profile and can nicely control the Albatross using differential thrust - was just wondering if I am doing it the “wrong” way. Already cruising (in the air) between New Britain and “mainland” PNG - I am beyond impressed! How could I not notice this masterpiece since December 2024?

I recognize you here from the Black Square threads, and I think that one thing @Ramasurinen and Nick/Black Square have in common, that you don’t see from a ton of devs, is how engaged and responsive they are. It’s a real gift to all of us who love their planes.

It is crystal clear. And not only that, but the dedication, too. I’ve spent most of my day flying the Albatross, my new favorite! I’d purchase it on release day if it was a payware!

Now THAT is a beautiful shot!

I don’t know if Im doing something wrong or if its a bug. On the G-111, the fuel totalizer buttons do nothing. Should I be able to toggle the Gal. Remaining and Gal. Used? Only the knob seems to function. Thanks in advance!

I’m not having much luck with textures on this machine. This is the 111 Passengers Long Range Blue livery. SU5.

@zac0006 That totalizer is a stock Asobo gauge, and it has a few limitations still I think.

@OldpondGL The black switches problem is an SU5 regression. The switches render fine in SU4.

I have already implemented a workaround fix and submitted an update (which also fixes the broken HU-16 autopilot in SU5), but I don’t know when that will become available. A future version of the SU5 beta may also fix it, but it’s unlikely.

If it bothers you a lot then the only solution right now is to uninstall the beta.

Cheers!

@RegentFalke4131 Yeah, they’ve been working on this for a few years now.

The G-111T is an awesome idea, and I have no doubt it will be a success eventually, but it’s a long road. They have the license, and the design is solid and proven, as are the engines they have in mind, but putting them together in a workable package with all new avionics is a pretty massive task. It’s going to take awhile.

Can’t wait to see the end result though.

What a beauty - the visual quality is absolutely top of the line :star_struck:

I couldn’t get the Albatross to start today, and finally figured out it was because I was at an airport with elevation of 7500’ and had the mixture at full rich. I know in the manual it says that mixture does not need to be adjusted for altitude during flight. Can someone with more knowledge than me explain proper settings for operating at higher altitude airports. For example, should I also be leaning for landing?

@zac0006 Yup. The mixture manages itself relative to manifold pressure, once the engine is running at normal cruise rpms, but during startup at high altitude you’ll need to set it manually. It’s normal practice with any real piston engine to lean the mixture as much as possible right after engine start, to prevent plug fouling, and then increase it for run-up and takeoff.

For landings at lower altitudes you typically want the mixture set for best power once on final approach, and then lean once clear of the runway. At a high altitude airport set the mixture to the middle “normal” range on approach, and then go full rich if you need to do a go around.

I’ve been meaning to update the checklists and manual with that, thanks for reminding me.

Cheers.

Hi, does anyone have the Littlenav map file? Thanks in advance. :slightly_smiling_face:

There’s one (I think that I made) linked in this post: Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread - #564 by vShannon2563
