Grumman Albatross HU-16/G111 Thread

@PhonedGorgon897 Sure, I’ll add that to the list for the next update. The white dirt marks should be gone from the sliding cockpit side windows now, but I’ll have a look at some of the others.

Btw, there’s a couple fixes for issues in there that you brought up in your videos, including audio feedback for the cowl and oil cooler flaps and temporary fixes for the G1000 double sound / animation issues. Hopefully WT can get a permanent fix done for that at some point.

Curious to see what you all think of my suppression of blue highlights option.

Cheers!

@Ramasurinen, first problem to report on my side: changes to the propeller rpm events seem to conflict with throttle quadrants like the Honeycomb Bravo. With this new update, any movement of my propeller levers results in rpm dropping to 1500 and staying there whatever the propeller position may be. Those levers are linked with “propeller 1 axis” and “propeller 2 axis”. If I move the rpm control switches manually with my mouse, they react as expected and I can adjust the propellers accordingly.

Is there another input that I could link these propeller levers to, in order to return to their behaviour pre-update?

@BrettMercier Yup, that’s a bug, thanks for letting me know.

I have a fix already working for the next update, but in the meantime you can bind both props to a single lever via “Propeller Axis” if you don’t want to use the switches.

Cheers.

idk if youre my doppleganger but each sentence you wrote there is the exact copy of what i intended to write just now

What a fantastic update to my favorite MSFS plane. You promised even more „soul“ a few months ago and you did not disappoint.

Your work is outstanding. Thank you so much for keeping this aircraft alive! :folded_hands:

The moment when I wondered why you are allowed to provide full on support on these forums while other developers aren’t, only to realize again that the Albatross is a 1st party aircraft. An easy mistake to make, considering how very different your efforts are compared to those for any other default aircraft. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Let me thank you from the bottom of my heart for your exemplary continuous improvement of this awesome plane that I don’t fly often enough, I must admit.

I also realized that you made the excellent Lotussim L-39 Albatros (you like that bird, don’t you? ) for FSX, which was one of my favourite jets to fly. Is there any chance that the MSFS L-39 gets some love from you?

Great plane and great update. One important drawback I find is that the panel instruments are way too dark during daytime. In many aircraft it is possible to turn on the instruments lights even during daytime. Is that possible to implement?
And I just noticed that the elevator trim does not work.

@CrestedKhan2 Thanks!

First, the elevator trim issue you’re having… the trim is electric, so it won’t function unless the battery master switch is turned on (or the engines are running and generators providing power). I just tested it with the current streaming build and it’s working fine for me via the trim switch on the center console, and with an xbox controller. What kind of controller are you trying to actuate it with? Does it work when using the cockpit switch? If you turn on tooltips and use that switch you should see the value change.

Second, I haven’t ever heard of the instruments being hard to read before. FS2024 is more aggressive with its lighting and shadows sometimes than 2020, but not to the point of them being unreadable. Have you changed the exposure compensation in the graphics settings, or are you running any post-process shader effects?

As far as the instrument lights go, it is difficult to replicate the brightness that was available with them in 2020, due to the new lighting model in the sim, but I’ve been meaning to see if I can mess with that anyway.

Can you get me a screenshot where you find them difficult to read?

Cheers.

@Jigsaw407 Thanks very much for your kind words, really appreciate it!

Yeah, the Lotus L-39 was mine… 17 years ago now, wow. I did a portion of the initial work on the Reno L-39s for 2020 (airframe model, cockpit models, animations, a lot of the instruments etc) but there were many other people involved in that project, especially on the texture and coding sides, and the planes were managed by Asobo after release.

I don’t know if there are any future upgrades for those jets planned.

Thanks again!

I think your video “Vectors” is what really made me fall in love with Flight Sim. Hard to believe that you published that nearly 20 years ago. Just want to reiterate what everyone else has said - thank you for being so passionate about this aircraft. This really sets a new bar for a developer caring about their product.

I find a lot of analog instruments hard to read during daylight hours, specifically in MSFS 2024 – even in planes with backlit gauges lit up during the day. It’s not because the gauges are low contrast or blurry or anything, it’s a lighting issue. Something about 2024’s lighting makes it tough – when it’s bright outside, the cockpit panels seem excessively dark. For me, the Albatross is nowhere near the worst of them though.

About the trim issue: even with mouse cockpit interaction (without controllers) the trim does not do anything, although I see the switch move. Strange that I seem to be the only one. Battery and generators are on.

Panel lights: most instruments can be read (but not comfortably) but for example oil temperatures and pressure are very dark.

As a comparison, look at these panels from the B105 helicopter, without and with panel lights during daytime:

@CrestedKhan2 Can you please empty your community folder and try the trim again? I seem to recall long ago that that there was some addon that was overriding stock Asobo templates and messing up trim, among other things.

Also, do you have the plane installed locally? If so please uninstall it and try the streamed version, see if the trim problem persists?

Looking at your comparison screenshots the helo’s gauges are extremely dark and low contrast, and they’re solving that with lightmaps it seems.

I don’t see the same problem with the Albatross’ gauges, they seem quite legible by comparison. Also the Albatross is using projected lights, not lightmaps, and those can’t be boosted during the day without becoming massively overblown at night, not without writing a custom potentiometer controller which would likely just be a buggy mess.

I don’t really have a solution for you there, and it’s the first time I’ve seen any complaint about gauge legibility, but I’ll give it some thought.

Cheers.

Since SU6 there is a new issue on PS5. No matter if i select the G3X or G1000, both variants have drop tanks now.

When emptying my Community folder, the Trim starts working, so there definitely must be some add-on biting the Albatross. I already deleted some Albatross liveries, to no avail. Any clues?

Read the new manual about selecting/deselecting drop tanks.

@CrestedKhan2 It won’t be one of the liveries, as they don’t contain any code.

It will be an aircraft addon causing this, an older one, maybe a 2020 plane. I believe the SDK has checks to prevent that kind of bad coding practice now, but it didn’t before.

Add half your planes back in and see if it happens again, if not then add the other half.

Cheers.

@CozyOrange5208 It’s a bit different now but you get to decide if you want them or not.

You can remove the drop tanks by clicking on them in avatar mode during pre-flight, or by unticking their checkbox on the options clipboard. They can only be removed or installed on the ground (or water) with the engines off.

The plane will remember your selection for future flights, and each type (HU-16 & G-111) have separate settings.

Cheers!

Bingo, it was indeed a MSFS2020 plane (Blacksquare Caravan) that seems to have caused the Trim failure. Working fine now. Thanks.

I would like to report a very serious issue.

I bought this plane out of nowhere from the Marketplace and I cannot stop flying it. MONSTROUS work for an incredible price. I’m in awe! Extremely happy!
