Hi all
As the title says is this an add on worth purchasing to add to my flight sim experience?
I’ve checked out a fair few YouTube videos which to be fair some are a year old plus so I assume it’s been well updated since most of these reviews have been posted.
I’ve also checked out Flighsim.to at the GSX profiles created and read the comments to these which again highlight some issues but again date back a bit.
I really like the look of this add on to go along with my Fenix A320 and my ATR 72-600 so just wondering is it worth a purchase today ?
Thanks
Mike
Well, I love the functionalities. I hate the way it is controlled. Buggy, slow, I always feel it could be smarter. I uninstalled it many times and always came back to it. If there was an alternative, it would buy that. But… there isn’t… It’s a complicated relationship I have with this program.
Hi yes it seems to have a love hate relationship with folk and seems to get installed , uninstalled and reinstalled again.
I can live with the bugs it may have as nothings perfect but as long as it functions correctly to a point I’d be happy with that. I assume the devs are constantly updating it and sorting out bugs and issues ?
Yes and no about the bug fixing. Sometimes I don’t even know if it’s a bug or a feature. They keep adding stuff (great), but basic functionalities go wrong with proper solutions.
GSX is a great add on, I use it every day and have for many months now. The Fenix integration/automation is fantastic and worth having for that alone as is the seated passengers (on the subset of compatible airliners). The flying airliner experience just wouldn’t be the same without it for me. It is also one of the most frequently updated MSFS apps I’ve ever come across.
Cons:
- a bit of a faff to get to grips with setting up if you are not used to it
- 3rd party/community profiles need to be downloaded for every 3rd party airport you own or want to use it with. Exclusions in GSX config (FSDT installer) need to be done for these to stop the “World of jetways” (the 2nd part of GSX) from placing duplicate jetways over the 3rd party airport ones. Default MSFS airports should work fine as “world of jetways” substitutes in replacement jetways which work with GSX.
- Some of the available airport profiles are better than others.
- GSX can be temperamental with the external couatl scripting engine requiring restarts and waiting for that to happen or manually having to restart it yourself.
- You get used to it’s quirks, but it can be hard to figure out why things don’t working right at times. (sometimes it is to do with profiles, sometimes its the gates and sometimes it’s liveries that are the issue, and it can be hard to debug.
- FS2024 is on the horizon with whatever it brings re passengers/loading so if you are planning on jumping to FS2024 then may be better to see how GSX works with it first.
All in all though a fantastic add on for airliner flying.
Worth noting that load times will increase quite significantly with GSX installed.
In spite of all the quirks, I cant think of not having it. well, just the pushback and visual guidance in parking itself is it worth it and I am not talking about other services like refueling, boarding etc.
Thanks for the feedback much appreciated. Think I might take a punt on it.
Can I just check, once downloaded and installed I then have download a GSX file for each add on airport I have installed ? I assume these are on Flightsim.to ?
I only have a few main airports installed such as Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Carlisle, Luton, Belfast and Dundee. I have a fair few burning blue airfields which I use for GA so thanks these won’t need files.
The GSX profiles are either on flightsim.to, or some are located in the install directory, or some are installable from the 3rd paty installer (if they have one) eg. IniManager
You just copy them into the GSX profiles directory (you will have to look up the location in the large manual) and you are good to go.
Pyreegue have their official gsx profiles for EGPH, EGPF and EGAA listed on fs.to I think.
Oh and don’t forget to exclude those 3rd party airports in FSDT Installer GSX config or you will likely see duplicate jetways at these 3rd party airports.
Assuming it’s for a supported aircraft like the Fenix 319 and 320, you will also need to go in to the GSX config and toggle the checkbox for seated passengers to appear. Not all aircraft are currently supported yet.
Do I do this after installation is complete ?
Yes. Install gsx first. Go to config to set up things afterwards.
Thanks. All installed and went to the config and it looks like GSX already had my installed airports in the disabled list automatically. I loaded up EGPH and couldn’t see any odd looking jetways
With regards to the profiles are actually needed for GSX to function? What do the custom profiles actually do?
They are custom configurations (many created by community as freeware) for each stand at a particular airport which will include
- defining stop marks
- ground marshal position
- jet way / air stair position
- ground service vehicle placement
- passengers & crew walking paths (in airport or down jetway) defined
- push backs defined
- VDGS placement type/position
Basically they make GSX work accurately. It will work somewhat without a GSX profile, but you will likely see visual issues with alignments and likely only see default bussed in passengers. It’s functionality and accuracy thing.
They are stored down -
C:\Users\MyUserID\AppData\Roaming\virtuali\GSX\MSFS
and I have a shortcut on my desktop to get there quickly to store GSX profiles.
There are also aircraft profiles, but generally for many of the more prominent aircraft you don’t need these as GSX supports them internally. For newer or more niche aircraft you might need one. They are stored in same directory, but down an additional “Airplanes” directory. These files define exact positions of doors and walking paths for passengers on board etc. Again you can find these as freeware on FS .to.
