GTX970 to GTX1080 disappointment

I thought I was making a huge upgrade from a 970 4gb to a 1080 8gb and especially after spending $400 on a used card because I can’t afford the $1200+ for a newer model, and was super disappointed to see almost no noticable improvement except for maybe a small + in FPS. Even went from a 1080p monitor to a 4k.

A 1080 is still a fine card overall. However, MSFS is a very CPU bound game. A higher end GPU will help, but you have to keep your expectations in check.

Moving up from a GTX970 @ 1080p to a GTX1080 @ 4K is not really going to gain you any extra performance. You’ve increased your GPU performance by about 25%, which is substantial, but you’re also now throwing 4X the workload at it.

Try running at 4K with resolution scaling at 50%. That will give you a true representation of the improvement of your 1080 over the 970 at the same resolution.

Hello,
I moved your post to PC & Hardware, where discussions of CPUs, RAM, monitors, graphics cards, drivers, etc. goes.

Agreed- I have an 8700k with a 1080ti and my biggest problem is CPU performance. The GPU handles a lot for what it is- I run 4k with most settings on high to ultra, and after the hotfix, I can also get my render scaling back to 100 and LODs to 175-200 and be perfectly content with what I have performance-wise.

Even at KATL yesterday, I did two full IFR flights- one in the FBW and the other in the CRJ and performance was substantially better than before the update.

If I were you- I’d focus on getting a top-end CPU, fast memory and a fast SSD. The 1080ti will serve you well for a little while longer no problem.

I’m not surprised by this topic. There is a reason I never upgraded my GPU without skipping at least one generation in the past 20 years, except once when I got free upgrade by lifetime warranty.

If you went from 1080p to 4K monitor, you actually increase the load on the card. Keep same resolution to see real difference. And sell your GTX970 if you didn’t already. After getting money from 970, your upgrade cost would look more reasonable for the improvement you got.

Listing your cpu would help

I7 6700k 16gb G Skill Trident Z DDR4 3000
ASUS TUF SABERTOOTH Z170 MB. I wonder if adding RAM will help I I’ve been wanting to do that for a while now. Also, noticed that although frame rates are mid 20’s and up, there seems to be a studder or lack of smoothness while flying below 1500 AGL

Upgrading to a more powerful cpu will help.
Recently upgraded from an i5 8400 to i7 10700k and and the sim overall is more fluid.n
Most of stutters @low altitudes are gone.

Aim for the ideal cpu specs 8c/16t

MSFS doesn’t get significantly faster with a fast GPU.
Buy a CPU with a high single core rating, like a Ryzen 5 5600X

Don’t think so, I’m running smoothly with 16GB so that’s not the issue.
As it was pointed out already, look for a better CPU and you’ll probably need a new motherboard as well since LGA1151 is outdated and there’s no room for you to upgrade with it.

Might as well check for a Ryzen 5 3600X, that is still a great CPU at a good price for gaming and works well with MSFS. There’s also Intel alternatives in that price range of course.

His 1080 is giving him about 100% improvement in fps over the 970. So the upgrade is considerable and more than welcomed. Considering the GPU prices nowadays, he got a good deal. I myself am trying to go from my GTX 1060 to a 1070 Ti (yup, same generation). It will be a nice bump in FPS for my ultrawide 1080p monitor, enough to hold my gaming until Nvidia 5000 generation.

The problem is that he went to 4K without asking first in a forum. He could run at 4k with the 1080, but perhaps not how he would liked.

Mate, have a look at a You Tuber…CPT Turner

I have followed his tips…So far so good…
I am using a GTX 1080 …8 GB with latest drivers..i5 6600…16GB ram…pretty basic machine…achieving high 30’s to high 40’s FPS over your average airport and city …more than playable.

Upgrading from 1080ti to 3090 doesn’t have much impact either. (Except in VR, VR is much improved)
It’s the CPU and Data streaming that cripples the game.
