Having lots of fun with the light sports aircraft

I’m having so much fun flying these light sports aircraft, never flown them in the flesh, but in the sim, they are great to fly! Loving the CTLS and the Jabiru addon. I would love to take these up in real life, and get blown about by wind, anybody here flown any of these type of aircraft in real life and are they fun?

Haven’t flown any LSA IRL but I’m hoping to maybe this summer. I’d like to see the new Flight Design F2 in MSFS. Meanwhile, I’m having fun in the CTSL.

If you haven’t already tried it, download the Rotax 915 mod for the JMB VL-3 and give it a whirl. It turns what’s otherwise a nice, but not outstanding ultralight into a total speed demon.

The top of the line VL-3 with the Rotax 915 is the fastest ultralight in the world. This is my new low level sightseeing plane now. It can fly nice and slow when you need it to in order to get good views, and then goes like a scalded cat when you punch the throttle to travel to your next target.

The CTSL is a fast slippery little thing, dug out my Extreme 3D Pro Joystick to fly it. Looking forward to trying the JMB VL-3 mod too!

Are you in the states? Never have that much luck seeing any of these aircraft at my local Aerodrome, the most exotic was for me the Brittan Norman and Condorde, mainly commercial and Cessna, and the occasional Spitfire on UK Fathers day here in the UK.

Yes, FWIW California. It looks like a lot of LSA development is being done in Europe and then contracting with manufacturers in the US for the US market.

I was surprised and pleased to see so many light sport aircraft in MSFS. I didn’t know anything about LSA until I started flying them in MSFS. I wonder if any of these LSA companies have sales because of MSFS.

Is flying LSA requires any license IRL?

I’n currently learning to fly the Jabiru J160 in Australia. Great training aircraft. Challenging and lots of fun. Using MSFS and the IRIS Jabiru add on as a training tool. Good for the basics and familiarity with the instrument layout but the flight model needs work. IRIS are working on this but I think MSFS has limitations. The left turning tendencies of the real plane are signifcant at low speed, high power and almost non existent in the sim. My instructor is constantly on at me about applying more right rudder!

Is anyone working on an Ikarus C42 mod? It’s a widely used LSA especially in Europe.

Yes you need a license to fly LSA. Here in the UK it’s called a National Private Pilot’s Licence (NPPL).

I don’t fly in RL anymore so am not fully up to date on how things may have changed with EASA licensing.

How do you have your joystick sensitivity controls set for the Jab? I ask because never flown it I have to guess on how I think they should be set, I have them so the controls feels light but if you have the experience you will probably have them set nearer to real life settings, that would be great to know :slight_smile:

Yes. In Australia you need a recreational license, minimum 20 hours training.

In the US, Light Sport Airplanes is a category of aircraft specifications such as speed, number of people, size of the engine. Many other countries have similar regulations.

Anyone with a Private Pilots License can fly any LSA although transition training is often needed.

Because the PPL takes time and money, the FAA created two licenses to make it easier for people to become pilots. They are the Recreational Pilot and the Sports Pilot. The Recrational Pi.ot requirements are similar to the PPL so most Student Pilots just go with the PPL.

The Sports Pilot license is for flying LSA only making it easier and less expensive than going through PPL training.

One category not often mentioned is the Ultralight. Ultralights have regulations and restrictions. However, no pilot’s license is needed. The ultralight cannot be flown in controlled airspace unless authorized by ATC and must have radio communication and transponder equipment. The Areolite 103 is an ultralight add-on for MSFS.

I can’t find any LSAs for rent or training in my area (Portland, Oregon) but they look so fun! It’s all vintage Cessna 152 and 172s around here – pretty much the same thing but heavier. :wink:

Yep I fly the C42 and the SkyRanger Swift IRL. The C42 has the 80 HP Rotax and the SkyRanger Swift has the 100 HP variant and yep they sure are a lot of fun :slightly_smiling_face:

Was hoping someone might bring the C42 to MSFS as I had it X-Plane. The CTSL in MSFS is fun too though.

I have aileron and elevator set at 50%. Seems ok.
