I don’t know anything about an nvidia app (I didn’t use any nvidia apps to enable/disable HDR when I used an nvidia card). In Windows Display Settings, check the advanced and graphics settings to ensure that HDR is enabled. This will put the video card into a mode where it outputs an HDR picture to the monitor, and allows for programs to render in HDR mode if they wish and have it work. Then, in MSFS graphics settings ensure that “HDR10” is on.
These must both be on: Windows display settings “HDR” and MSFS settings “HDR10”.
You can only turn on MSFS’s “HDR10” if the system was in HDR mode when you start up MSFS.
Note there’s also a setting for “Auto HDR” under Windows graphics options; this should not be necessary, but you should ensure that “optimization for windowed fullscreen” is on.
i have an HDR10+ monitor and windows is in HDR mode. MOST of the time when i boot the simulator, if i click on HDR10, the screen washes out and looks like it’s being viewed through gauze (a sign that HDR10 hasn’t activated properly).
about 10% of the time it works, and i get full HDR10 (which, to be honest, mostly just makes ground texture colours look better, rather than the expected high intensity lighting – but that’s probably because the more accurate HDR10 colourspace is being enforced).
it’s a pretty annoying bug. has anyone else encountered this?
So I’m guessing the game hdr is broken might explain why i get different colours everytime. I’ll just turn it all off and use filters until it’s sorted
What monitor do you use ? Mines a Samsung odyssey g8 ultra wide
It looks like you’re confusing RTX Video HDR with the HDR10 setting in MSFS. You can learn more about RTX HDR technology in the link below. RTX Video FAQ | NVIDIA
I’ll take a look. Either way with hdr on it looks very poor, trees are too green etc and if I don’t add any filters the screen seems to have a tint of darkness
I’ll get there eventually
I did have them almost there but I changed the wrong filter and can’t remember the settings and no matter what I do or try it seems washed out now
You shouldn’t have to touch any filters unless there’s something wrong with your monitor and it’s wildly out of calibration (in which case, fix your monitor calibration).
What you can expect with HDR on vs HDR off is darker darks, brighter brights, and more saturated colors at high brightnesses. Sounds like it’s working?
You might also benefit from running the Windows HDR calibration app to ensure things are properly adjusted for your monitor’s brightness range. I haven’t touched it in a while so YMMV.
I think you’re mistaken about the NVIDIA app not supporting MSFS 2024. I just checked and MSFS 2024 shows up perfectly fine in my NVIDIA app, which I installed for testing purposes.
RTX HDR converts content originally recorded in SDR to “HDR” (fake HDR). For example, the recent developer stream on YouTube is available in SDR, but the NVIDIA app enhances it by adding HDR.
When HDR is enabled in Windows and on your monitor, if you open a video recorded in HDR, RTX HDR feature will show as inactive because no SDR-to-HDR conversion is needed.
The same applies to games - for instance, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020/2024 supports HDR, so there’s no need for SDR-to-HDR conversion.
edit
Also, don’t forget Windows + Alt + B - this key combination lets you quickly enable or disable HDR without having to navigate through system settings
I’ll try messing with the screen brightness it only goes up to 400 nits but that should be enough inside. I only have it on 30 brightness and there seems to be a dark tint over everything.
It might be also possible going from a true 4k oled screen to a 1440 I’m expecting to much I’ll give it another try on my days off and just start flying and get used too it
The effect of HDR is also clearly visible on the approach lights, runway and taxiway – they appear brighter compared to the SDR version. As for the Windows HDR Calibration app, it’s worth mentioning that it is only intended for Windows 11.
