Headset not detected error

Hello,
New to MSFS2020 getting the “Headset Not detected” error, I Have been going through the forums trying mostly everything that has been suggested and have hit a wall.

Steam version
Oculus Quest 2
Oculus link cable

I installed MSFS2020 on a different M.2 drive (called it G:) than my other steam games(followed instructions on steam to create a new folder at a different location), I edited my OpenXR as stated in all the post and confirmed Oculus is the run time.
Does it matter that the path for the OpenXR is in C: drive ?

Very Frustrated, actually spent 3 hours trying everything I seen in the post here and on youtube. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Did you manually edit the registry? You shouldn’t do that. Head to Oculus app → settings → set Oculus as active OpenXR runtime.

Yes I manually edited the registry initially following some youtube advice. After that not working I did do the Oculus app set as OpenXR runtime also. And the Oculus App shows I am linked to my PC.

Do I need to keep the Oculus App open while playing ?
Can I close the Steam app after starting MSFS2020 ?

You should first verify that you get any light on the Quest 2 screen. Do you see the home screen when you put the headset on?

Are you using wired or wireless link to the computer?

My quest stays in the quest home screen, I can log on to virtual desktop and open steam and get to the Steam home and launch MSFS but when I go to switch to VR I get the “headset Not detected”.
Using a oculus link cable

So you put your headset on → switch to virtual desktop → launch Steam → launch MSFS?

Try a bit differently. Leave your headset to the table. Open Steam in pancake mode, open MSFS in pancake mode, navigate to “switch to VR mode” in MSFS settings → hit the button → wait a few seconds and put the headset on.

That was one of the ways I tried last evening.

Not sure If I tried you suggestion or not, I unfortunately won’t get a chance to try it until later this evening or tomorrow. I will follow up when I do.
Thanks for you help so far.

Is there a way for me to backtrack to try and start this all over again ? Wouldn’t want reinstall MSFS but maybe delete OpenXR and reinstall ? I originally thought I did not have it and downloaded it so is it possible I have 2 instances running ?
Just throwing these ideas out there.

I used to get this all the time with my Oculus headset. The fix for me was to use a different USB port for the cable. That worked (until it didn’t) and I had to do it again. Good luck.

I only have 1 USB-C on my motherboard for the oculus link cable, but I do have an USB adapter that I could use and go USB directly into my Graphics card. I will try this tonight.

Thank you

Verify that USB-C connection is working
Device Manager
USB Bus controller
Is there a yellow ! on a line
if so
Right click on it
Deactivate USB
Right Click again
Activate USB
No more yellow !
Should be better

I’m pretty sure the link cable is working, it shows connected in the Oculus software.
And I can get into the Oculus Home. Just when I start up MSFS then No headset detected error.

Ok, was able to check things out this morning:

Verified USB-C/link cable was working by connecting and flying around in AirCar using it.
I had watched a YouTube video posted a year ago and the person said he has to get Oculus up and running first and then start up MSFS, which I did and it went into VR,
With that being said, as soon as I went into VR it was a Stutterfest in MSFS and the Oculus home(couldn’t even move around in home or choose anything on menu).

questions:
Is the Oculus debug Window supposed to be on the PC monitor at the same time (seems like it would be double dipping on GPU) ?
Do I have to turn down PC choices in MSFS so they aren’t so high, or is VR and PC independent of each other ?
PC specs:
Amd Ryzen 5 3600, 6 core
RTX 2060 8GB
Ram currently 16 GB, installing 16 GB more later today when it arrives
motherboard MSI Tomahawk B450 max

Is there any recommendations for software to dial in better performance ?

Thanks in advance

James

Can you let us know the specs of your machine and vr settings in flight Sim? Have you tried keeping the settings in fs in TAA and using the openxr tool kit?

[quote=“Tjames000, post:13, topic:547946”]

Amd Ryzen 5 3600, 6 core
RTX 2060 6GB
Ram currently 32 GB
motherboard MSI Tomahawk B450 max

I have all settings in MSFS in VR to Low, TAA
I turned back to DX11
Have experimented with turning OpenXR off and on also

Still Not good enough to play in VR, flew last night in 2D

Hi,

Sorry to hear you haven’t had a good experience yet in MSFS with your Quest 2.
I use a Quest 2 paired with an RTX 3070 and i7-10700K.

I have a great flight experience. Happy to describe my workflow and settings if you think it might be useful?

Cheers,

Have you tried using the openxr tool kit? I note also that your graphics card is a little on the underpowered side. You need a fairly high performance system for vr to work very smoothly. Have you checked to see if you’re cpu or gpu bound?

I did try the openxr tool kit this morning, was able to get a consistent 22-25 fps with most everything turned to low. Not the best but somewhat playable. Yeah I agree my graphics card being underpowered for This simulator ( I played Half-life Alyx with no problems) and I did get a “CPU bound” while using the Openxr tool kit a couple times.
With Graphics card prices at the moment I might be waiting a little to upgrade, would a better processor do much to improve it ?

Thanks for the offer but the difference in system specs would have me doing what I have been already, trial and error.

If you are cpu bound, then that may well be a better upgrade since its cheaper. You can do. It bit by bit. Perhaps a new cpu and mobo. Then move onto ram and then finally a 3080ti or a 40 series when it suits the budget. Before spending any money though ensure your main bottlenecks are well understood.
