Headwind a330 Neo Descent rate

Hi all,

Since headwind doesn’t have a dedicated communication channel I said I would ask here.

Has anyone a fix for the crazy climb and descent rate? Climbs at 7000FPM and similar descent rates?

This happens both in managed and altitude select?

Latest version of the a330.

The best thing I can tell you is that you are using this aircraft at your own risk. The developer doesn’t have any support and the aircraft is carried as in a Beta test stage. Also, it uses code that is borrowed from the FBW A32NX, so don’t expect much. The developer is a one-man show, so…

He just updated. And he’s got a bit more help now I think.

It’s been merged up to the latest FBW 0.7.4 stable release, so it’s actually in good shape.

Climb/descent is definitely not optimal, and it sips fuel slowly, but pretty stable on my 5hr flight today.

I just finished flying it… I own almost every plane out and when it comes to stability this one is hands down in the top 5 of all addons. Sure that might be bc a lot is borrowed from fbw, but it’s definitely not as you just described.

There is nothing in my “description” that is either untrue or incorrect. However, it may not have been all that helpful.

My suggestion in this case would be to decide upon an appropriate descent profile (usually about 3*), use a descent calculator to determine the correct Top of Descent and then use the Manual Vertical Speed control to make your descent instead of using the Airbus Managed Descent feature. Just know that the higher and faster you are, the greater the Feet per Second your initial descent will be. If it is modeled in the FBW 0.7.4 (and I think it is) there is a Top of Descent Calculator in the EFB you can use. And the FPA / VS selector is active. Utilize the FPA option and dial-in your descent profile at the appropriate time. You should probably get into the practice of doing your descent this way as a rule. One more thing, watch your airspeed! Make adjustments on the way down as necessary.

Indeed it is. Having the EFB up to date is a big plus. Throttle detent calibration was much-needed for the A330.

There was a hot fix just released that is supposed to fix this.

Thanks for the heads up!

Gone the other way now. Can’t climb past 31000

Haha. Maybe it will be a “Hot Fix Saturday”

If I have some time I’ll try it this weekend.

I think the the descent rate is wrong on version 0.102. I am unable to get more thean 1500 fpm in descent from FL390 reducing to 1000 fpm as I pass FL270. Throttle is
correctly at idle and speed set at 280 kts. You have to pop the spoilers to get a normal rate of descent.

I’m on a cargo run from Incheon to Tokyo. I didn’t have any issues getting to FL390. Climb rate is much more reasonable now.

I haven’t gotten to descent yet, I will check @BilingualHarp7 's observation when I get there. Until then, he may enjoy seeing his work high above the Sea of Japan!

EDIT: Managed descent from FL390 to FL340 at .81 Mach was around 2000 ft/min. Further managed descent to FL230 was around 2600 ft/min at similar speed. I was still in the CRZ phase of flight, not the DES phase. Maybe it’s different when in descent mode?

EDIT 2: DES mode from FL230 to 15000ft was between 1500 and 2000 ft/min.

Your figures sound about right.

Aircraft performance database list the descent performance of the A330-900 as mach 0.81 and 1500fpm in descent from FL410 to FL240. Then 290kts and 3000fpm from FL240 to FL100. So I may just have been a bit slow at 280kts. Will check again on my next livery update flight, but FL270 and 1000fpm I was getting was way off the figures I should have got, even if I was a bit slow.

Love doing liveries that are a bit different like the DHL 007, and it was the 1st to be updated after the latest release. Some liveries required a lot of updating as the engines and winglets had to be done again from scratch, so I started with the DHL as it has little detail in these areas.

Slightly late reply, but if you get the Airbus in open climb mode it is possible to pitch up and climb at very high V/S rates. That will continue until to cancel it or A.FLOOR kicks in prior to a stall.

There are good videos on YT that explain open climb, where V/S is often nicknamed Very-Silly.
