I am planning to add a second SSD to my ASRock motherboard. The additional slot is located beneath the GPU. Should this new SSD have a heat sink? BTW the CPU is an AMD 3800x with an MSI AMD5700xt.
I assume you meant M.2? Never a bad idea to add a heatsink. Those drives can get pretty hot.
If you have the clearance in height for the heatsink under the GPU.
Yup, if there is the space, definitely add one. A GPUās bulk can reduce airflow over the SSD, depending upon your fan setup & hardware configuration within the case. Perhaps go to either the MSI or AMD forums & do a search or pose the question there.
I used to have a 5700xt gpu with a 3800xt cpu so I know that youāll have a lot of heat to deal with. On a previous Asrock motherboard, I used the NVMe heatsink below and it fit under the gpu and worked out well. I highly recommend it.
Great NVMe heatsink for under gpu
Thank you for posting this. Iād not seen this kind of heatsink before. I followed the link and was surprised at whatās available. Very cool.
Yes, very cool indeed!! . You can plug the fan into one of your motherboard headers for case fans to control the fan speed and hence the noise emitted. Mine ran silent and cooled the NVMe perfectly.
Oh! I totally missed the pun⦠gettinā slow in my old ageš
Hereās a link to an article that ties in nicely with this thread. I have an MSI Z690 Edge mobo that uses the āheat shieldā tested in the article so I want to replace it asap.
Edit: I just noticed- that article is from 2017. I donāt know if the design has been improved or not. Iāll try to update my post after I see what is installed on my Z690 (available as of 2021).
I would just run it a bit and check the temps. If the motherboard is keeping them cool, thereās no reason to worry. I have two m.2ās and I didnāt use any extra cooling. Theyāre warm, but not hot. I imagine some boards cool much better than others. My board is a Gigabyte z490
Thank you. Would you tell me how to monitor the temp of and SD drive?
In Windows go to System > Storage > Disks and Volumes
Edit: And then Properties on the appropriate drive. Not all drives show it but my m.2ās do.
HWInfo will show the drive temperature.
Thank you all for the replies.
