Helicopter control issues, cant land, erratic, or just bad skill? Thrustmaster throttle + warthog stick; Input Viewer

I’ve gone through a few generic guides and configured my thurstmaster stick (warthog) and throttle, along with my mfg pedals.

I have it set to basically move the throttle Back and the helicopter rises etc, which i think is correct
Im confused though on the input viewer, the left vertical bars, there are i think 3 of them, one is always there, not sure what they indicate though i think the left one is the “throttle”

I can get a helo up no issues, yeah it does the turning tendency thing and i counter with pedals and or trim, but lowering to the ground seems to hit a limit and wont go down (I dont recall this issue before in 2020)

It might just be technique or maybe im missing something here?

Any thoughts

Sounds as if the throttle (which is now collective pitch) movement is not fully 0 to 100% and back. I used to use a home made collective lever and cut the link inside my throttle so with a switch I could plug it into said throttle and use the lever instead. (can’t now - nowhere to cut the track easily)

Anyway, for all aircraft I set max response and min deadband for all controls. It especially helps with helis (as do proper rudder pedals). Like in real life altering one thing makes all else change so flying is a mater of constant little corrections (note ‘little’ - if you get to stick waving time a crash will follow - just like IRL). My definition of a helicopter is: a set of out of balance forces all flying along together and interfering with each other.

Aeroplanes have a small menu of nasty things they will do if we abuse them. helis have a vast menu of nasty things and try to make at least 5 happen at any one moment. The trick is to know what and stop them before they get properly started.

So it will take a while of practice but you will get there - it really all has to become instinctive - if we have to think first it is usually too late. Good luck and have fun !

I think the bar that is always there may be your torque pedal input? It will be at halfway if your input is zero then move one way or the other depending on if you press left or right.

thats probably what it is, though i swear the left veritcal bar in the input viewer when i took off started at baseline/flat, zero etc, then i raised up but then lowering back down the bar was sorta stuck halfway, ill double check this later on, that and or that im a newb relatively speaking to helos, just minor usage here or there

FWIW…When I was in the military I got a chance to learn to “fly” a helicopter one afternoon with an experienced helicopter flight instructor. I was able to control it by the end of the training but I never soloed.

It was easier than flying a helicopter in FS2024.

Tested again, what seems to happen is if i start full forward position on the thurstmaster throttle, then pull back to lift off , get airborne maybe 500 + feet, if i then push it all the way forward again, in the input viewer it shows the bar decrease, then suddenly it springs back up around middle , if i look at the graphic in the helicopter you can see the collective bounce back slightly , not sure why

This seems to mostly happen only in the first part of ascending, or just not always im not sure which

I guess its possible i have something tripped on the thrustmaster throttle causing this

It is possible that aslightly glitchy’ throttle wouldn’t show up when flying fixed wing. To make sure you could test the control - settings - controls - throttle - axis graphs. If a potentiometer is going bad it could do that to you (I bought Thrustmaster controls because they don’t use them - hall effect sensors instead.)

Or it could be some auto throttle/auto collective that is engaged in the sim. (And in any case if you gently take off - no extreme power demand - it won’t = rotor RPM dropping and auto systems trying to ‘help’ Keep watching the engine RPM, Rotor RPM and torque. Hope you get it solved.

That’s because you likely have the vortex ring state protection assistant on.

oh i had no idea, ill check that, so thats like an assisted, non realistic setting obviously i guess
