So I’m already upset that I had to do fixed wing stuff to get helicopter career mode unlocked/paid for initially, but whatever.
Now, there are only two helicopter SAR missions (no hoist). One I did, the other, is in an extremely hilly area with zero, and I actually mean zero places to land because of total tree cover, so rescue is impossible.
I have crashed twice while attempting to find trees that aren’t actually trees (think bushes from 2020) that have no hitbox, but I’m just giving up because it’s impossible to tell. I can land far away, but it’s not close enough to register. I’m also using VR, so I have a full view of everything around me. But it’s it literally full canopy, and if it isn’t canopy, it has stick trees in the openings making it not viable for landing.
I don’t know how many of these search and rescue missions will be out daily, but if it’s only two, and everybody gets the same ones, they should vet landing areas at least. If it’s random for each person though, then that’s obviously not possible.
If not, have an “unreachable person” option, because in real life, if there was nowhere to land and hoisting wasn’t available, the pilot wouldn’t try to land and squeeze into unsafe areas.
Now I’m dinged for crashing because I’m trying to figure out the broken system. Suboptimal for sure.
Please feel free to tag your post with either msfs-2020 or msfs-2024 if you would like to discuss a specific sim.
Seems like an unfortunate but predictable consequence of a dynamic mission generator.
You’d hope that the algorithm responsible would have been designed to only create missions with a target and viable landing spot in range of each other. I can appreciate the latter is somewhat difficult to define, but solid trees does seem obvious enough.
If there were more than 2 available, I wouldn’t be that upset because I could keep grinding on. But since there is only two I’m stuck waiting until the next day for new generation.
The fixed wing mission system is borked as well. Airplanes stuck half in and half out of buildings, parking spots inside structures on and on. I have had so many missions I could not start and even worse end (after an hour flight) because of this severly flawed mission system.
Same thing here. The first worked fine, probably because that one is curated. The very next one had the person on the side of steep hillside under complete tree cover with no place to land anywhere nearby.
Should allow you to mark their position and call in a team on foot if that is going to happen. Otherwise, they should only spawn in clearings. That would only make sense anyways. If I were looking to be rescued, I’d certainly try to find a clearing.
I am stuck at this mission also, it’s the only one on my map so far, still showing from yesterday. Might have to expand my zones to find more like suggested above. Would help if the people were willing to walk 20 feet to my landing spot, not be a complete passenger princess like my fiancé. Lol couldn’t imagine trying this freelance.
if only those were the only problems…
I’m becoming stupid trying to pick up poor “peones” lost at sea here and there…
but my rescue personnel are like lifeless mannequins.
while I try to hover no indication if I’m in the right position or not, I have to go outside removing all the immersion. Then I see my man bounce and float on the water as if he were a piece of plastic…
no. we’re not there at all.
Managed to get past the mission with the woman in the trees by landing on top of the trees. Have then completed the required amount of SAR missions to unlock hoist SAR. But I have not found a single mission that looks anything like the trailer images. Just a life boat in the sea. No sinking ship etc nearby. After having completed a few boring hoists ,now no SAR missions at all are showing up…. They certainly do not reset daily. Also have no seen any mountain hoist rescues
I tried landing on top of the trees earlier, but the ground effect bug kept throwing me around. Love beta testing with nobody to report to.
And the missions keep refreshing for me, but it’s the same too. That one and the one in Australia.
Hi, I’m not there yet, but does the game simulate the use of a hoist and operator to drop down into and through the trees to perform the recovery and rescue - like they had to do in Vietnam?
Also, I tested the CH-47D, and it has wheel brakes on the rear axles. Unlike the Miltech version, we should be able to perform rescues by hovering level with only the rear of the aircraft on the edge of the terrain or buildings. Is this wishful thinking, or are there really no advanced rescue missions in or planned for the game?
I was also hoping to be able to drop a smoke jumper and then drop retardent on the line in a mission(s).
The SAR missions are so disheartening, because there is so much potential here, yet it falls flat because of some extremely poor and completely unnecessary engineering faults by the developer team. Like, how can you work on the SAR missions and then when you test them you see that it generated in a place with dense forest and hilly terrain making it impossible to land and proceed with the mission and then go “yup, looks good to me!”. Embarrassing, really. If I did something like this in my software engieering job I would be fired!
For that reason I created a wishlist item for an uptional target UI. It’s the same with hoisting, without VR it is incredibly difficult in part for the lack of 3D vision and not being able to assess distances.
For that one I created a bug report because it often happens that during the cut scene the heliocpter slides away and crashes. IMO we should be able to press a button to start boarding and keep control over the heli during this because it does happen IRL that they touch down on the tip of the skid and hover that way
That’s how the Chinook does it in the real world. It’s called pinnacle landings, and as long as you have OGE power you can do it off any sized pinnacle.
I’ve tried to do it with the Miltech 47, but it doesn’t have brakes on the rear. That’s what I’ve wanted to do since I saw videos of someone extracting a team in Afghanistan that way. It’s why it was the first thing I tested in Blackbird 47, and had hoped one of the missions had us do exactly that. I’m not even sure that the CH-47 is used in any of the rescue type missions though.
Since my initial post, I have made it to where the original poster was talking about regarding the Rescue missions, and I 125% have the same frustration with the missions. Although, it doesn’t matter to me temporarily, as I’m now locked out of the game at the 60% thing. I can’t play any missions at all.
Before I was locked out of the game, I tried rescuing someone in the 125 by resting the front of my skids against the cliff in a semi hover. The game wouldn’t let me do it. It goes to a cut scene and I lost all control of the helicopter. I ended up helpless and watched my helicopter slide down the mountain in failure before the game gave me control of the helicopter back. I swung back around and saw the poor guy standing by himself on the side of the mountain probably saying “WTF”. If it wasn’t for the cutscene, the poor simulated victim would have survived his predicament.
Try around the border of France and Spain, I found quite a few there. if you click on a airport in a undiscovered location a pick “fast travel” and pay the travel price you will unlock that portion of the map for missions.
So I have ran into this same issue on more than one mission, frustrating as all hell to say the least. Few EASY fixes are… land and the further you are from the patient the longer the wait for them to walk to you (maybe a 500m radius to land and only after spotting them with a fly over as acknowledgment … or vice versa for your medic to get to them and back… AND OR let me use the hoist I am certified for…
Has this been addressed yet with a fix? This is the reason I moved from 2020 to 2024. DCS has great SAR scripting… can we not follow that, it’s not even developed in DCS is from users scripting.
