Hi mudkow. Would you say the 407 is more realistic now with the assists off? Have you tried that mod? Does that make it more realistic? Not being a heli pilot myself, I wouldn’t know, but I’d like to think I’m getting a good simulated experience and not wasting my time thinking I am. I suppose we all feel that way…lol.
It is better with the settings off. I play on am Xbox so no mod.
Playing with a control “stick” yaw control is difficult with assistance off. I will try with it on today. Collective assistance off works well.
While fun, they lack some subtle differences than the real thing.
My biggest is that the torque pull on takeoff seems more linear than a real helicopter. By that i mean on the helicopters i have flown (H60, H3, H65, B206,H1,H58) when one pulls collective (power) on take off, to lift the skids, a lot more is needed to start lifting and “break ground” (no skid flex in sim), then less to get to hover altitude.
Also helicopters hover “(one) skid low” due to aerodynamic forces. The 407 would be opposite skid then the Corbi due to opposite rotor rotation. Both seem to hover dead level.
Still, lots of fun (full disclosure, I have 0 B407 time, but over ~5500 hours helo time)
What control setup are you using on Xbox? I’ve been flying both the B407 and the G2 for the past couple of days, and I’m experiencing the correct skid low behavior. Left low on the 407 and right low on the G2.
The G2 is a little more refined than the 407 though. It loses a little altitude, as you nudge out of the hover before getting to ETL. You have to push the stick forward significantly when you enter ETL to keep from climbing. It’s a very good start.
I plan on testing the 407 more today for the same behaviors. So far it flies like a helicopter, but it seems like the pedal input is too light? I anticipate more pedal input than is needed. I have never flown a real B407 or G2 though. only Robbies.
I’m using a Pro-Flight Trainer Puma on PC no curves.
Hi mudkow. Thanks for your response. I tried that mod last night, and it just didn’t feel right (not that I would actually know), so I’m planning to remove it. I certainly respect your 5500 hrs and trust your opinion on the flight model over those with just DCS and other sim experience. Although you’re going to have to get off that Xbox and get yourself a dedicated pc with pedals and controllers!..lol. I’m currently using the Saitek (Logitech) X52 and Saitek Cessna pedals. As you know you can tweak the sensitivity and even add a curve to these things. I wish I knew what those curves should look like, and how much closer would it get me to the experience. I just have 142 hrs from 10 yrs ago IRL in Pipers and Cessnas. At least I have some idea what a small GA plane should feel like. I would love to get a lesson or two in a helicopter to have some perspective. For now, msfs will have to do! Thanks again for your reply…and belatu too! Dave
FYI I bound the longitudinal pitch (increase and decrease) to separate buttons on my joystick. It makes it almost like having a cyclic force trim, and makes flying more fun.
I have the pedals on my torsional rotation of the control stick. On an Xbox, what controls that sensitivity level?
Overkill channel in Youtube said there’s a mod for helicopters to help make them more stable. He also shows how to map your joystick settings for helicopters. OVERKILL, great channel.
