Help with ILS

Flight plan is setup, I’m following on Autopilot NAV set to GPS, I’ve put in the correct ILS freq. in NAV Radio. I descend on Autopilot to around 2000 ft then with the runway in sight I hit the Approach button… I see the Glide Slope come on, and it switches to LOC1 on the dial… this used to work for me, but now does not? New bug? Or am I missing a step?

Thanks for any help

I’ not sure if the approach mode works while still in GPS mode.
The approach modei works only with NAV1, which means you should push it once the Nav source has switched from GPS to LOC1.
It can also happen that it doesn’t switch automatically and you need to do that manually
(10-15NM from the runway)

What airport and which ILS? Are you sure the airport has ILS and not just LOC? At what altitude and position did you intercept?

Screenshots tell more than a thousand words.

Thanks guys. It’s not airport specific (ie. all airports do not work)
I just tried KVNY to KLAX landing at 6L ILS freq. 108.50, switched to LOC1 manually at 2200 ft, then hit APR, but no luck.

I see the diamond on the GS indicator is descending, but the plane never descends to the runway.

Weird. This used to work fine before SU5, so possibly it’s a bug for me.

Sometimes you need to push the APR button twice and/or switch to HDG and back to APR.
It’s pretty inconsistent since SU5.

Just tried hitting buttons multiple times etc. No luck. The diamond descends, the plane does not! ha!

I’ll continue to play around with settings etc and report if I have any success.

Can you post a panel screenshot when this happens?

What do you want to see in the screenshot? Garmin?

Yes indeed the Garmin😉

ILS is Radio based not GPS.

You have to Switch to VLOC on Final Aproach Fix

I’m using the G1000 typically and have the right ILS frequency put in. I’ll take a screenshot shortly and post

NAV1
Here’s the NAV1 setting for 9L at Heathrow

Here’s the GPS following normally after takeoff

here we are 7 miles out Approach activated and diamond moving down… plane just keeps going and does not descend.

What am I missing?

My guess will tell that you have the V/S mode selected and is in control. Try turning that off and I think it will capture the GS.

Its only meant to descent when that green dot hits the center of your hud.

Yes that would have been my guess too. But I am not too familiar with the G1000 as I mainly use the G3000.

Do you maybe have the Honeycomb throttle? And is your throttle AP still on the VS switch? It might force it on VS mode and then it isn’t capable of switching to APR mode.

Your descent should start at 7.5nm at 2500ft

You are already closer than that, so you are potentially outside of the GS beam. Try again, and fly at 2500ft steady. When you are at about 8nm out, click the APR button. Let us know how that goes.

Can you stream? I can watch along and help.

He should catch it automatically as he is under the glideslope and flying level. Eventually you will intersect with the slope.
