High RAM usage with Radeon Settings:Host Service in MSFS only

Whenever I play MSFS, my graphics driver software (Radeon Settings: Host Service) RAM usage gets to above 4GB; this only happens in MSFS, not in other games even big open-world ones like Just Cause 3 or Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. This RAM usage is on top of MSFS’ own RAM usage, and leads to freezing and stuttering even with RAM not being maxed out if I close everything else in my system. Normally, the service only uses about 600MB-1GB of RAM when in other games because of the recording feature saving to RAM

This is on driver version 22.11.2; I’ve tried going back to a previous driver, 22.5.1, and though it seemed to resolve the issue, I had frequent CTDs with MSFS so it may be that RAM usage didn’t have time to increase. Has anyone else experienced this with their AMD cards and knows a resolution that’s not going back to an old driver? I could try an intermediate “optional” AMD driver but I’m hoping there’s some other resolution beyond test-driving a whole bunch of drivers. I’ve tried posting on the AMDhelp subreddit but got no response. I’ve also tried disabling all features such as recording in the driver with no luck.

System specs: Ryzen 5 5600X, this has happened on two GPUs (Radeon 5700XT and 6800XT), 16GB 3600CL16 RAM, MSFS is on a 2TB NVME SSD with 300GB left on it.

Game settings: Rendering at 3168x1782 on a 1080p screen (used to be just 1080p on the 5700XT), DX11, everything ultra except for LoDs being at 100, off-screen caching at medium, motion blur off.

How Much ram do you have in your system?

Sorry, forgot to include my specs, I have 16GB of RAM. Normally the service uses about 600MB-1GB of RAM when in other games because of the recording feature saving to RAM.

Do you have rolling cache enabled in msfs?

If you can afford to go up to 32gb you would probably see some benefit if your having issue’s as I wouldn’t say the sim is using an excessive amount of Ram though I know your on about the radeon host service.

Looking at your CPU and GPU usage I wonder if Your ram is holding them back.

Yes, it was at 16GB. I’ll try delete the current rolling cache and set it to 32GB. In terms of CPU & GPU usage, I’ve gotten the settings to a point where it mostly switches between main thread and GPU limited (hence why the higher than native render resolution), I guess that screenshot was just at a downtime. The CPU never really goes above 75-80% since it’s main-thread limited rather than whole CPU usage, while the GPU maxes out at 100% at times.

Oh sorry I meant I think you would see some benefit if your pc had 32GB of Ram as at that usage it may well be holding your pc back.

I’m not sure if rolling cache effects ram usage or not it may just be written straight to your storage device.
Unless you have the rolling cache set up with ram cache software which would write the rolling cache to the ram.

Oh I see. I’m actually upgrading my system next month and I’ll have 32GB of RAM then, so hopefully it’ll be less impactful, but until then I want to find a fix for the RAM usage as it’s pretty abnormal and I feel like I shouldn’t be needing 32GB

I’m not expert by the way these just things I would look at.

Does running at native resolution have any effect on the ram usage? I imagine it would.

Any idea what resolution the Radeon host service is recording at. Assume that doesn’t go up with the sims resolution.

The driver is recording at 1080p but I’ve played other games with higher-than-native resolutions too. Oddly enough, changing the rolling cache size seems to have solved the issue at least temporarily somehow; perhaps there was some form of memory leak/corruption with the cache that was affecting the driver and deleting & resetting the cache fixed it? Honestly have no clue but RAM usage has been normal since then.

How odd well atleast it seems to have sorted the issue.
