Holy Blur! (Q2)

I want to preface this post and simply say that I am in love with VR! I think it’s an amazing concept and has brought an entirely different level of flight simulation to my household.

With that said, let me dive into my problem which is simply, blurred vision while using the Quest 2. I’ll admit that I’m newer to VR and have only started diving into this complex world. With that said, I’ve spent the last several days working with atleast 50 people to optimize my system for VR. I’ve included my hardware specs below for reference. So far I’ve adjusted my settings to within MSFS, Oculus App, and the Oculus Tray to the best of my ability with the input from everyone I explained above. What it seems to boil down to is rendering. Right now I’m at 80 and can push 100. With these numbers combined with my settings within the Oculus app I’m still finding that most of the panels are just too blurry (G1000, ProLine, G3000). Trying to manipulate the flight plan during a flight is nearly impossible and reminds me of someone who just took of their glasses.

I’m not necessarily looking for a 1,000 folks to provide input about what settings I should adjust on here either. After reading all of the various threads I’ve adjusted atleast everything twice. I did notice that when I jokingly increased the render to 150, everything became super sharp and crisp… while everything else became a slide show. With all of that being said, my one request would be for Asobo to optimize further the LCD panels to be more legible. The standard gauges/steam gauges for me atleast are pretty legible… it’s the screens that are becoming a nightmare. And my request may not be possible with the current hardware at all, but I figure it’s worth a shot.

Overall, this has been a blast and I’m super excited to see what the future holds for our hobby. This is a huge step in the right direction!

All the people impatiently demanding VR failed to tell you that no VR headset currently in existence provides a clear view of the instrument panel or the scenery.

Nothing seems to compensate for the fact that the VR scenery is blurry. Using the same hardware, Xplane in VR is very sharp. Even with excessively high settings in render serttings etc, scenery in FS2020 is still ‘soft’ and airports are difficult to see until you get very close. Non-VR suffers from the same problem, so it is the terrain generation system itself. VR just exacebates the problem!

From what I’ve seen things are a bit sharper in the the more expensive headsets like the G2 but Davidamills is right, I think people are expecting a little too much with the consumer level headsets and the fact that VR in FS2020 is sill very much in its early stages.

I don’t know if you can use the Nvidia freestyle post processing options with VR, but it’s worth taking a look.
You can play around with various settings to get improved contrast, saturation, clarity etc… I use them in normal 2D mode they work really well with no discernable performance hit.

The Quest 2 has a very sharp display with a high resolution, but in MSFS you need Render Scale 100 or above for a clear view. But editing a flight plan without using zoom (Right click) is not possible. There are instruments/gauges that are very well readable from the seating position, like the Altitude or Airsped. Also the labels of the Switches when you look around the cockpit and move a bit closer to them.

Guys your opinion - i osn an old cv1. Do you think i’d get a clearer picture with rift s or quest 2? Index, g2 etc ar ejust way too much for me to spend

Thanks!

Taken me a few days to get where I am now. 50-60fps country areas i7-8700k 2080ti 150% render scale in steam vr and 100 in openxr and 90 in game. The smoothness and sharpness is awesome. Also using ultra clouds terrain etc. Oculus rift s looks unreal!

Video or it doesn’t happen. I want to see proof of your unique experience.

Haha don’t have to believe me but thats how I play. Spent 3 days trying different setting. Use private jets and the mb339 mainly nothing beats jetting around the French alps. I also have an aircon unit blowing on my pc keeping it icy cool

I made the step from CV1 to Quest 2, and yes, the picture is WAY clearer.

My Reverb G2 provides clarity in FS2020. I can fly, see all the screens, edit flight plans without zooming in, etc. on it with no problem.

Freestyle not working with G2, the headset is not seen by the GPU as the “display”.

Oh well, was just an idea , hopefully someone will find a solution if there is one

What is your take on this thread? Do you experiwnce issues with quest as well?
