Honeycomb Alpha: 3D printing an iPad + keyboard stand

One of the first prints I did when I got my printer this summer, was a Honeycomb Alpha iPad mount.

Ever since, I’ve used my iPad for AirTrack with the yoke, and it’s lovely. Except… it’s a bit cumbersome to reach the keyboard.

I’ve thought of doing this for a long time, and today I finally went all in on it.

I found drawings of the Alpha on their website, and modeled a mockup.

The first, rough design.

Based on that, I stripped away a big chunk and made a test print. Took about 2 hours to complete. The test was to see whether screw holes were the correct size and location, and to see whether the supports followed the shape of the yoke casing. It did!!

Next, I did the same with the keyboard and ipad stands, just a snippet to see the full length, and whether it would hold up. I then discovered there are rubber feet under the keyboard, and had to adjust the keyboard stand a little.

Next up was to do a snug fit test of the screws in place.

And now, my first version of this… this… imagineered product soon comes to life. Just need to pass one final test, and it’s off to the printer!

Last night I printed a smaller version to see if the iPad and keyboard would fit together. I also thought I’d just leave it this size because it would leave me two screws on either side in case of other things I’d like to attach.
Unfortunately I had forgot about the cable to the keyboard, so the ipad and the keyboard wouldn’t sit in center, nor stable.

I then started printing the original sized plate. The filament I started with must’ve become bad. Kept breaking into pieces as the extruder pulled on the filament. So I changed to my last spool, brand new (and crazy yellow. don’t worry, I’ll prime it and give it a coat of black)

7 hours later, the plate came out perfect. It feels surprisingly sturdy, as I could use way more force than the weight of the iPad and keyboard would put on the plate.

Mounted, units placed, happy flying and typing this as I keep an eye on the iPad to see my flight goes according to plan.

Owww could you share the files I would love to do this on my yoke as well

@Dualznz I’ll share it on Thingiverse soon. I think I will need to make a new version which is more fool proof to attach the stands and make a test print of it first though.

Also, make note that the keyboard stand was made for my keyboard specifically. You can adjust the model to your liking, but the plate itself can’t be adjusted much, since it is filling the entire width of the buildable volume of an Ender 3 printer. (the design is just under 20cm)

np i can just modify it in fusion 360

How are you getting on with thingyverse, my new 3d printer arrived and im keen to print this bracket, could you also add the fusion360 files or whatever modeller you used to make the templates.

Cheers

Been busy the past few days. And I’m thinking I should try to upload a file that is as complete as possible.

Right now I’ve gone back to just the base plate with no supports in the model. I need to think of a different way to attach the supports. I used super glue to attach the center support.

I’m thinking I might do a circular cut into the plate itself, and have a pin on the center support (for me, this is stable enough at least)

I modeled this in Modo by the way. Never tried Fusion 360.

Okey, it’s here

excellent, i have started working on some modifications for it in fusion 360 will post updates and thingyverse once i have done them, i am also setting up both android and ios templates with plug holds for right angle and straight charging plugs

Looks good! I have the same keyboard and yoke as you, so this might come in handy. Do you ususally need the keyboard when flying or is it just for alt-tabbing?

Look forward to see the changes @Dualznz

@veegard I find it handy to have the keyboard available for typing in general while the yoke is up. I don’t usually use the keyboard for flying, just useful when I’m stuck with something and need to look it up, ask for help on discord etc, or equally be of help to someone.

Thanks so much for the file, I was just about to start designing one exactly the same! I have my MFU attached to the top of the Alpha, so I just remade the back leg to be longer to rest on top of my usb hub that is attached on the top of the back of the Alpha.

I know this is a long shot since its an old post but do you still have the cad sketch of the Alpha yoke?
