Honeycomb alpha starter help

Starter on the yoke wont work for me in certain aircraft (like cessna 152). Basically it seems like it presses the button quickly over and over again making it sound like the engine turns over instead of starting up. Starts up with the mouse. See attached video. Not sure if known issue.

Apologies in advance if the following is insulting, but basic point I was initially caught out on (had exactly the same thing as you until I worked out what I was doing wrong
!):
[a] have you opened fuel valve?
[b] Cessna 152 sometimes need priming via Fuel Pump?
[c] Is starter switch on Alpha Yoke correctly assigned in Controls?

I doubt it can be [a] or [b] as it fires up OK with mouse, but include them just in case.

As I say, sorry if you have already done these correctly and it still won’t work

Regards, Alasdair (another newbie at this game)

Yes the fuel valve is opened

Yes the engine is primed

The controls are at default and the starter works in most other planes.
It is activating the starter but appears to click the starter numerous times instead of holding it down, which is why you can see the key clicking back and forth between start position and both magnetos in the cockpit of the sim.

I can start it with the mouse. It’s something to do with the yoke for sure.

This was a bug in older some older versions of mods (like the C152X mod); however I think it’s been fixed in the latest versions.
Anyway, if you"re using another mod, it’s easy to fix : go into the directory of your plane/mod, look for a file in it named engine.cfg, the path should be something like :

<main_plane_directory>\SimObjects\Airplanes<plane_name>\engine.cfg

In it you’ll have to replace the values of the following variables with these values :

normalized_starter_torque = 0.3 ; Starter torque factor
starter_time = 1.5 ; Time the Starter stays active when pressed

Your Alphacomb Alpha starter key will be back in business.

yeah i deleted the c152 mod and now it works. So odd. Thanks!

As stated on various threads ad nauseum, every patch breaks mods period. Many suggest not modding anything until this simulator is more mature to be politically correct, or more fixed for us real world folks. I have not installed any mods, although I have gotten some freeware ones, because I don’t want to chase my tail trying to figure out which one has broken something which worked yesterday. My suggestion is to stay with the default planes until they are correct.

Or in other words, taking a 3 year old PC with Intel I5 and putting in a RTX-3090 card and wondering why the thing is not running this game like a horse race. The planes are not world class ready, and aftermarket mods fix some things but possibly break something else. I don’t need more frustrations than I got already.

UPDATE: I have 6 mods installed, mostly to do with airports and C-17 FW plane. I take off ones which I will not use, and keep them in another place till I want them back. Some I delete period as not something I like.

Please confirm that this modification to the engine.cfg will NOT fix the refusal to start problem if you are using the honeycomb alpha yoke with it’s rocker switches? If I unplug the alpha yoke, 152 starts normally with mouse.

Let me try to be more clear.

  • if you use no mod, you shouldn’t have any problem
  • when I used an old version of the C152X mod two months ago, I had the problem and was able to fix it with the aforementioned modifications to the engines.cfg file. (I think the problem does not exist anymore for this mod, it’s been fixed since)

So if you have the problem with a modded plane then:

  • make sure you have the latest version of the mod you’re using.
  • if you do, then you can try the modification I suggested in the engine.cfg of the mod. And please tell me which plane/mod it is, I may have a look at it.

And remember to back up anythign you change in the core sim files!

I’m more like “Never modify anything in the core sim files” but yeah, if you feel the urge to do it, make a backup. And make a backup of your modified file too, because the next update might replace it.

Thank you. Whether I have the C152x mod installed in the Community folder or not, my problem appears when I plug in my Honeycomb Alpha yoke. Problem is 1, can’t start using yoke start switch and 2. OBS jumps in 10 degree increments. Without the Honeycomb yoke, the mod and default 152 are both OK.

I have submitted a bug report citing the combination of 152 modded or not and a honeycomb Alpha yoke. BTW, the yoke works flawlessly in X-Plane and reportededly also in P3D so I’m pretty sure Absobo will have to address this edge case when they have more time.

I have a new problem with the yoke after the latest patch.
All mods are removed for now so it’s not that

In the c172, the battery switch is now triggering both the regular battery and standby battery to turn on at the same time.

According to one reviewer on the throttle quadrant (not issues here) the drivers are not released. The yoke drivers are supposed to be already in the game. I would check the settings in the game and make sure they are mapped correctly, and you don’t have double mappings. Had a ton of double mappings in my Logitech 3dPro Joystick, which I had to write down, and then take out so I could map the JS the way I wanted it to work. It also had some mappings conflicting with the keyboard, be aware.

Hi,

Anyone aware if the recent FS update may have messed up the mod vs 0.17 or not? I installed the mod after the update. List of issues :

  1. My engine is stuttering as some other posters have commented in the past. I’m using a honeycomb yoke. Fuel is set to ON, primed the engine and ignition key on start long enough.

  2. The yoke visibility cannot be turned off with mouse click.

  3. Also, a default issue of mine is left elevator trim not moving when inspecting plane from outside. Only right one (starboard side) moves. This issue continued to remain even after the mod install. Please confirm if what I’m seeing is not just my issue.

Also I assume the mod will apply the engines config file in the Community folder. I noticed the file reads :

normalized_starter_torque = 0.2 ; Starter torque factor **SG updated was 0.3
starter_time = 0.55 ; Time the Starter stays active when pressed **SG updated was 1.5

Is this correct?

After reading the thread, I understand that the mod may have been broken by the recent update.

Can anyone confirm this?

I feel like removing the mod installation file from Community folder and wait for some updated solutions.

Idk it feels like in most planes if you go to starter it turns over a bit then quickly goes back to ‘both’ then goes back to starter again so it turns over and over. It’s gotta be an issue with the yoke.

That’s how the default 152 is. Mod or not.

In the bindings for the yoke, there’s multiple variables for engine starting. Use the one that starter (hold). This will keep the starter engaged until you turn it back to both. Ignore the animation on screen.

I got that situation after installing the update, very annoying, it lasted for two days and day 3 it suddenly was gone and I did nothing about it
it was a bug thing - C172 was fine, one way to resolve this until was pc or whatever works it for itself, is going to menu and let Al control start the aircraft. Like the previous answer, yes you have to start wait a few seconds then click to each magnet L/R and then both where it should stay - this bug even prevented to do that with the keys/ mouse. Good luck.

I could pick up my Honeycomb Alpha yesterday and honestly, before i had it in my hands i didnt expect miracles. I tought it would not be such a big upgrad from the Saitek one. I tought the next best thing would be a Yoko or a Brunner Force Feedback yoke. But

■■■■ was i wrong!
Im absolutely positively surprised, it feels so good, its so precise. Finally the C172 felt more like the real one. “Twitchyness” is gone thanks to the 1:1 steering ratio and the 90degree angle. The elevator aswell is much more precise and the amount of force needed on the elevator almost has a Force-Feedback-like feeling. Finally the plane feels like it should and i can butter the landings.

Honestly, i was a bit concerned about the flightmodel of the C172, specially at landing but now i have to say it feels very good compared to IRL.

So, everyone who has a ■■■■■■ Saitek-Yoke since a decade like me, with a horrible deadzone, unlinear response curve, absolutely unprecise elevator axis. Throw that ■■■■ outta the window and get a Honeycomb Alpha!

I know it’s months late but I am having the same issue with no mod. Just got the yoke.

Hi, same issue on Xcub and pitts
